The base Mac mini is praised for Apple silicon speed in a tiny desktop, with enough power for everyday work and even some gaming or heavier tasks. The compact form factor can pair well with external storage, and macOS can offload installs and data to a Thunderbolt dock with an NVMe drive. The main knocks are the fixed 16GB memory and 256GB storage, which cannot be upgraded later and may feel tight at this price. Recent Micro Center and Costco deals also make the current price look less compelling.
The deal can be attractive if you can find an open-box Mac mini near Micro Center for around $700 while still keeping Apple warranty coverage.
macOS can offload important data and even new app installs to an external drive, which helps make 256GB workable.
A Mac mini can use a dock under the unit that takes an NVMe drive via Thunderbolt, which supports expanding storage without replacing the internal drive.
Apple silicon performance can feel efficient for tasks like editing video, compiling code, or running local models compared with typical PC configurations.
The fixed 16GB RAM and non-upgradeable design can force a sell-and-rebuy cycle when you need higher specs later.
The 256GB fixed storage can be too limiting for a near-$1000 Mac mini, which pushes buyers toward external storage.
The non-user-replaceable NVMe storage can raise concerns about lifespan and "terrabytes written" when using a 256GB configuration.
The $779.99 price can be unattractive compared with recent sales or open-box deals for 16GB M3/M4 Mac minis at much lower prices.
