FYI, like all places in Hawaii you can access their beaches REGARDLESS of whether you stay there. There is a small public access parking lot.

Actually, there are four free/public parking lots adjacent to the Ko Olina lagoons, including a large one right next to Ulua Lagoon (aka Lagoon 4), that are within walking distance of the Aulani Resort.

Disney - "We can't understand why people are not staying at our hotels. It's only $800/night. Anyone can afford that, right?"

Was just there. Not worth the money. Beach area sucks for anythi g but a toddler. Pool area and lazy river and slides got old after a few hours. Travel anywhere is an additional trek.

Way too expensive to not have ocean access. It's also in the middle of nowhere near nothing. I recommend Hilton Hawaiian Village instead

Actually it's only 25% off so it still costs 1.5 kidneys.

It has direct ocean access via Kohola Lagoon. I much prefer the layed back vibe of Ko Olina to the madhouse vibe of Honolulu. Just how I prefer to enjoy Hawaii, but to each their own.

The biggest savings at Aulani are found through renting points from a Disney Vacation Club member. You'll likely save half or more that way. A 4 person studio can be had for as low as $300 per night, depending on the season.

If you are on a budget, and just want to experience Aulani with your family, rent points from a DVC member for one night. You can show up early in the morning and get wristbands for the resort, and you can stay as late as you like the following day. 2 full days for the price of one night. Do a split stay for 4 days for the price of 2.

That's why I think it's perfect for a day or 2 at the start of your vacation when you have jet lag. We were there at the start of our trip and then moved onto Waikiki. We did stay on points though.

Where do you find a dvc member to rent
Google "DVC points rental", and you will find a few sites. I have used dvcrentalstore.com. dvcrequest.com is another popular site. They act as a middleman between DVC members who want to rent out their points, and those who want to rent them. I have also rented points from a seller on eBay who had a lot of good feedback. There are also DVC Facebook groups that have people who will rent you their points.

A potential problem with eBay and Facebook is that you are dealing directly with people, who you don't personally know, and who could pull the rug out from under you after you pay them. Look out for scammers, and make sure that you trust the person on the other end of the deal. I would trust eBay over Facebook, as you can see feedback from those who have rented from them before. Just message the sellers on eBay directly with what you are looking for, rather than purchasing a listing. I believe I paid $17 per point from an eBay member about a year ago, but that rate could have gone up. You will probably get a better deal buying directly from a member, without a middleman, but a middleman website will have more buyer protection.

Booking opens up for DVC members at 11 months out. The closer to the 11 month window you book, the more likely you are to find the dates/rooms that you want. At 7 months out, DVC members who own at other DVC properties other than their "home resort" can book at other DVC resorts. Booking under 7 months becomes even more difficult.

Aulani is a resort in which the difficulty to book very much depends on the time of year you book, and the room type that you want. That 16 point standard hotel room (the cheapest room there is), you will usually have to book right at 11 months.

edit...here is an Aulani DVC points chart that will be helpful...
