This LG C6 OLED evo AI 4K TV is being discussed mainly for its picture quality and smart TV features, but the thread centers on privacy concerns and pricing. The set has a physical microphone on and off switch, and a workaround is to use a temporary guest network for setup, then block the TV from the router and rely on a streaming box. Pricing also looks soft, with the LG Partner Store showing $899 and $809 after the EARLYBF10 code, while Costco matches $999.99 with extra warranty and better delivery terms.

Common Questions (3)

  • The LG Partner Store was listed at $899, and a Black Friday checkout price of $809 was shown with the EARLYBF10 code. Costco was also reported at $999.99, but it includes 3 extra years of Allstate protection, room-of-choice delivery, and a better return policy.

  • A practical approach is to connect it to a temporary guest network for setup and updates, then disconnect it and use a streaming box instead of the TV interface. Another option is to block the TV at the router, unblock only for updates, then re-block it.

  • Yes. The set has a physical on/off switch for the microphone, which lets you disable it at the hardware level instead of only through software settings.

Gamers Nexus did a fantastic exposé on LG TV's spyware. All manufacturers are doing it but LG is egregious. Worth checking out if you are in the market.

IMHO, LG is a Predator. They say that despite you paying for the TV, that they still "Own the Glass" and therefore have a right to resell your data that was displayed upon it and to call home with data it can find on you network, as well. Testers demonstrated that LG has a hidden microphone in the TV that records room conversations and transmits it back to them. Never an LG in my home again. NEVER. LG is EVIL. If you wouldn't let a stranger put a microphone in your home, overhear all your conversations and have access to your network, why would you let LG ?

"LG's own marketing pitch to businesses says that "we know who's in the LG household. We know which devices are there. We know what you're exposed to on TV and we know how to extend that reach into mobile."

Sign the TV into a temporary guest network for initial install. Add updates. Disconnect and never reconnect. Use a streaming box instead of the bad TV UI.

It does add extra hassle. For sure. But if it gets you the TV you want for the right price, it's worth it.

I block my TV from the router side until I want to do updates. Unblock, update, re-block.

If you never update firmware, this should continue to work.

However, all it will take is one deal with an AT&T or Xfinity to allow LG TVs to connect to their open wifi / guest networks to have your offline tv suddenly sending data home to LG again.

This problem will get worse before it gets better.

No doubt Samsung does the same thing.

Vizio got in trouble years ago for spying on what you watch on their TVs (even via HDMI inputs). The financial fallout might have contributed to their sale to Walmart.

Don't connect any "smart" TV to the Internet. If there's a firmware update you care about (something that affects display performance or longevity, not just security patches or streaming service changes) most of them still support updating via USB.

Pick the external streaming box you like best, or trust most. Apple probably harvests the least data, or at least shares it with the fewest third parties, of the "legitimate" options, but YMMV. Or take the "if buying isn't ownership, piracy isn't they" approach; I won't judge you for it, but neither will I represent you in court for it.

Every time you allow it to connect, it sends everything it's recorded about you in the meantime.

Interesting enough, I just bought an LG oled monitor and last night while I was playing a game I was going to switch my headset mic to my desktop mic. But I noticed "LG Monitor webcam mic" was now on the list of inputs....

I looked it up and there are LG monitors with built in webcams but this is not one of them.... Needless to say I am going to return it.
