Audio Science Review recommended these at their $150/ea, $300/pair price point in 2020. However, they also noted an audible hiss that can be heard until 2ft from the speakers. Makes me hesitant to grab these for desktop use. Full writeup here: https://www.audiosciencereview.co...tor.18505/
These are a solid deal at retail price. Fantastic deal! If you need monitors definitely grab these. They also have the 8 inch for 150 if you have the space and want the extra bass extension. Considering they are this price on multiple marketplaces I would assume they're releasing a new model soon. Regardless, this makes it by far the best budget studio monitor on the market rn.

I ended up getting the 5" version of these speakers after listening to a bunch of reviews comparing these to the 6" and 8" versions. The 5s for whatever reason sound better imo. I paired JBL LSR310s sub with it and man this is one impressive set. Gets crazy loud and sounds sooo good. I record metal music and just run my axe fx iii directly through these with stereo xlrs and it beats having a practice amp by miles. Highly recommend the JBL 305p MKII speakers.

The hiss is audible from about 12 feet if you have the gain cranked up (like you would to listen from a TV). It is the tweeter waveguide that supposedly makes the hissing prominent. Studio monitors without the waveguide do not seem to hiss by comparison
I use these for my daily drivers; I have no hiss; but I do use an audio interface; not sure if that helps. Never had a hiss over 7 years of owning these. They sounds great; neutral for mixing if that is your thing; but never any problems. Only complaint is these are huge; so you need space on your desk to have these at appropriate ear level. But I do the best I can w that.

fwiw, I have never experienced this hiss that many people talk about, and I do use my JBLs for nearfield listening, and they are always on.
I do use RCA-to-XLR cables, which might have something to do with it.
In any case, Amazon has the best return policy around, including free return shipping...so you risk nothing by trying them out for yourself. Love mine!
$120 per speaker will not get you anything that offers the same sound quality as these, not even close.

Focal makes nice speakers, though they tend to be a bit more treble-forward than JBL.
The main difference here is that when you buy used, you're taking a leap of faith---no return policy, so if you didn't like them you'd have to go through the hassle of reselling on the used market.
If you tried the JBL but didn't like them, back to Amazon they go on Jeff Bezos' dime, presto.
Plus, for $300 you could get a pair of the JBL 308p currently on sale for $150 each on Amazon. The bigger woofer will provide more headroom and mid-bass.

I run high-end studio gear...neve, spl, ssl etc
A friend was visiting and said, you have all this top end gear, why haven't you bought better speakers?
Told him, that these were fantastic and I want Neumann's but it really does not make a lot of difference if you room isn't measured. Mine is treated with GK but not measured or air gapped etc. It just a hobby and these JBL's with their sub a fantastic value.
Hiss, only if I'm right next to it, but that is from the analog gear.
It's like the Mac M1 Studio back when "oh, i hear the fan". mmm okay internet
