How does the upgrade work if you have the switch 1 game?

But what's nice about it is you no longer need the switch 1 cart after upgrading so it could be sold to recoup the upgrade cost

FYI, you're spreading self-generated falsehood. This is first party, it is physical. If you want to read further, even the game page says Physical. Please stop with self-generated facts.
"Self-genetsted falsehood" is a new one. https://www.nintendolife.com/news...t-february

Fyi, being first-party doesn't matter anymore: Pokopia is a game-key card. Also, game-key cards are listed as "physical" because you're getting a physical cartridge. They don't classify them as digital.

Off topic. But does this (not requiring switch 1 cart after upgrading to switch 2) apply to switch 1 games like the Mario galaxy1/2 combo

If I understand correctly, the reason why game key cards exist is because they can't (or maybe won't , due to storage prices) fit the game onto the physical cartridge. But it should still act like a physical copy in the sense that you have to insert it and you can also sell/share it. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
