I've certainly used quick links ... not carabiners ... for this purpose, and I thoroughly recommend not letting the threaded part rust in place, even if antiseize is messy. But something I read recently reminds me that hooks will straighten out under excessive loads, potentially preventing another piece in the system from failing in a more violent manner.

Now, maybe you would prefer your trailer safety chains hold until the very last instant before either they or the quick link snaps, and I can't argue with that.
