Community Reviews

The Mac Studio M5 Max stands out as a compact workstation for local AI and heavy creative work, with 18 core CPU, 32 core GPU, 36GB unified memory, 512GB SSD, WiFi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, and a strong port mix including four Thunderbolt 5 ports and 10 GbE. The 48GB and 1TB version is framed as the better balanced option for more memory and storage, especially for larger models and image generation. The base 512GB storage feels tight for a Max chip, and macOS reserves memory, so 48GB is treated as the floor rather than a luxury. Replaceable SSDs also make future storage expansion more appealing.

  • Local AI developers running larger models, because 48GB is the bare minimum for image generation and the Max chip is much faster for prompt and token generation.

    M5RahulSmartMeal986

  • Mac users who need fast external storage expansion, because this model has replaceable SSDs instead of soldered storage.

    whodiini

  • Creators needing a compact workstation with pro ports, because it includes four Thunderbolt 5 ports, 10GbE, HDMI 2.1, and front USB-C.

    Whatthefahad

  • Buyers wanting the stronger base discount, because the $1999 configuration is the better deal than the higher-memory version's smaller markdown.

    milkmandan

  • Local AI developers planning to run multiple agents or large-context models, because 48GB can bottleneck and may force swap.

    M5RahulSmartMeal986

  • Users who want lots of internal headroom for future-proofing, because 48GB is below the 96GB to 128GB target suggested for long-term local use.

    CleverHome408M5Rahul

  • Storage-heavy workflows, because the base 512GB SSD is considered too small for a Max chip.

    M5Rahul

  • Buyers expecting the top configuration to stay discounted, because the 128GB/2TB version sold out immediately when briefly marked down.

this frontpage deal is back. should be mass upvoted. also 48GB/1TB version is $400 off for $2999. not as good of a deal as the base ($500 off) but if you need the more ram, storage, gpu cores and the increased Memory bandwidth, its a solid deal

with large restocks at local MC, i would imagine this might be nearing the last time this might be discounted like this until next year

Good deal! Would you go with this Mac Studio or the M4 Pro Mac mini with 48gb of RAM for primarily local AI (Hermes or Openclaw) development?

Yeah that would be ideal, I just can't spend that kind of money right now. I was thinking of using smaller models for day-to-day basic agentic work, but still using cloud models like Claude's for coding and such.

Doesn't matter. The 48 GB RAM is still a bottleneck, unless you're looking to work with significantly quantized models. Shoot for 96 or 128.

But, if it must be between those two, the Studio.

Look into hybrid models ( for privacy )

agreed. The big difference is that the M5 max has 4x more cores for Ai processing than the M4 Pro. $3k for the 48GB studio max version is prob the one you want.

If you can wait a bit, people are working on providing expansion SSDs. The 2026 Mac mini models including the M5 pro are soldered on the board whereas the M5 Studio Max has replaceable SSDs. Since the form factor has changed, it will take a while to reverse engineer the storage module. If you cant wait, get the $3k version with 1TB and 48GB memory.
