with large restocks at local MC, i would imagine this might be nearing the last time this might be discounted like this until next iteration

The Mac Studio M5 Max stands out as a compact, very fast desktop for creative work and local model tinkering, with Thunderbolt 5, 10 GbE, Wi Fi 7, and replaceable SSDs. The 36GB and 512GB base setup feels tight for software development and serious local AI, while the 48GB and 1TB step up is viewed as the better value for heavier workloads. For typical use it can feel overbuilt, but for Lightroom, raw photo handling, and a small high performance workstation, it lands as a strong fit.
The Mac Studio configuration includes Thunderbolt 5, 10GbE LAN, and HDMI 2.1 ports for flexible high-bandwidth workflows.
The Studio can run local models, and it can deliver faster prompt and token generation performance than an M4 Pro 48GB setup.
The Studio's replaceable SSD design can make storage expansion more feasible than soldered SSD designs in the 2026 Mac mini line.
The Studio can handle demanding Lightroom and RAW file workflows smoothly after adding external storage.
The Mac Studio's memory and disk are not upgradable, which can leave buyers wishing they had selected higher RAM and larger SSD capacity.
The 48GB unified memory configuration can act as a bottleneck for local AI workloads unless using significantly quantized models.
The 36GB/512GB configuration can run out of RAM and disk space during software development tests, forcing process kills and frequent data moves.
Micro Center price matching can be operationally tricky, since in-store attempts may be refused and the website can show out-of-stock when arriving.

Tried last time in store and manager lady refused to do anything over 5% lol... though by the time I got there in the evening MicroCenter website was showing OOS
The studio is much faster 2x on the prompt speed and ~1.4x on the token gen. But what good is that if you can't run a half decent model with a large context? The 48gb can run every model a 5090 can just slower.
When I make my next jump in performance I'll be getting an M5 Ultra 128GB. Those model sizes you can run multiple local agents and you'll need the extra bump in speed from Max to Ultra
