The Mac Studio M5 Max stands out as a compact, very fast desktop for creative work and local AI, with Thunderbolt 5, 10GbE, Wi Fi 7, and a replaceable SSD. The 36GB and 512GB base setup feels tight for coding, Xcode, and serious local models, while the 48GB and 1TB step up is viewed as the more practical configuration. For photo and Lightroom work, it flies, but the storage ceiling and non upgradable memory remain the main tradeoffs.
The Mac Studio M5 Max includes multiple high-bandwidth ports like Thunderbolt 5, 10GbE LAN, and HDMI 2.1 for flexible workstation setups.
The Studio can run local models and can deliver faster prompt and token generation performance versus a prior M4 Pro setup.
The Studio's replaceable SSD design can make storage expansion more feasible than soldered SSDs on the 2026 Mac mini models.
The Studio can handle demanding photo workflows, with Lightroom running faster and R5II RAW files handled effortlessly after adding external storage.
The 36GB unified memory configuration can create RAM pressure and force process termination during software development tests.
The 36GB/512GB configuration can feel limiting for local LLM work, leading to returns or upgrades to higher RAM.
The Mac Studio's memory and disk are not upgradable, which can leave buyers wishing they had purchased more RAM and storage upfront.
The base storage size can be criticized as too small for a Max-chip Mac Studio, especially for buyers expecting more internal capacity.

Any recommendations for good TB4/TB5 NVMe enclosures and SSDs?

The 512GB storage isn't an issue for me, it's the RAM. I think I'll only consider 64GB for RAM in future because I have 1 simulator open in Xcode and my memory pressure is orange, and I'm swapping.
I never once swapped on my old 64gb machine that I just replaced
