Even the 'better' ones like Strapino that did well in PFs review have several critical reviews of early failures and the retracting mechanism eventually failing so even the 'pay more for quality' logic doesn't apply with these. They are an awesome idea but make sure you have a set of the old school ones on hand at all times if and when these fail.
Community Reviews
Towmax retractable ratchet straps are mainly about speed and convenience, with the loose end winding back into the mechanism like a tape measure. They make quick work of tying down pickup loads, small furniture, and light trailer cargo, and the reel design feels well executed for frequent use. The tradeoff is that retractable straps add moving parts, so durability and failure under heavy load are real concerns, especially compared with heavier duty standard straps. The price looks fair for the convenience, but warranty and long term reliability matter here.
The retractable reel mechanism can retract like a tape measure, which removes the loose strap end during setup.
The retractable design can make pickup-bed strapping faster for items like small furniture or a lawn mower on a small trailer.
The retractable straps can feel convenient and well executed for light-duty use such as securing furniture to a dolly.
The retractable straps can work well for towing applications like strapping a car on a car hauler behind a Tacoma.
The retracting mechanism can add extra components that may fail, especially under severe load or near failure tolerances.
The retractable straps can be treated as wear items that eventually fail, including reports of retracting-mechanism failures on other brands.
The 600-lb safe working load rating can be much lower than traditional tie-down straps with higher safe working load figures.
The retractable straps may not be worth the extra money for infrequent use because they can feel more fragile than traditional straps.
