I actually have the center channel, satellites and subwoofer for 20 years or so buying them from Circuit City. I remember paying $400 for just them back in the day. I later added the floor standing speakers for $250 and in my opinion they all sound great. I still use them. This price is incredible.

Good deal, yes, however, the floorstanders go down to 31Hz & the sub only goes down to 32Hz,so it's essentially a good Lamp stand! Or you could make a 2nd system with just the bookshelfers & the sub!🙂

Same level, which is better would be a personal choice after listening.

Your statement holds no merit... although they may bottom at relatively the same frequency, the sub will play that 32hz at a much higher volume (db) than the floorstanding speakers will play their 31 hz. I realize that you're a bot, but I'm writing this for the benefit of any potential purchasers.

These are not hard to drive.Just look at the usual popular brands & find one that offers the features you need.
You only need 5 channels which should save you even more.

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank

For those considering these speakers. I purchased the CF-70 and the ESW-C10 subwoofer. I have been testing them for about 3 weeks now and have passed the break in period. Here is my review of them. Disclosure, I have been a huge fan of Energy Speakers since the 90's with my first pair being the 3.1e, and have also currently still own the Connoisseur C-6, then the Connoisseur C-7 and the E-XL series. So I am a "fanboy" of Energy speakers to say the lest. However, I am disappointed in these CF-70 speakers for the following reasons:

Imaging/Soundstage: Average: These speakers produce a wider soundstage than my C6/C7 speakers. However, their imaging is not very good. The vocals are not localized very well and you can't the instruments, although appear to have a wider sound stage, are not very easy to localize either. I think these are designed more for HT than 2 channel listening (mostly what I do).

Sound Quality: Good: these speakers do sound good with good emphasis on vocals. Compared to my C6/C7, the vocals are crisp and sound very lively. They sound less "nasal" compared to my older Energy speakers. The bottom end can be a bit "boomy" and less controlled then my old Energy speakers, but overall not bad.

Frequency Response / Power Handling: VERY BAD: This is the main Achilles Heel of these speakers. They are rated for 300watts but that is definitely a false number. I currently power them with a Rotel RB-1080 Power amp rated at 200w/channel and a Rotel RC-1070 Pre-amp. At half-way up on the volume knob, the woofers bottom out and "POP" whenever the bass hits. The power specs are definitely false. I think the new Chinese owners of Energy used sub-par components in these new reproductions, but I cannot confirm since I do not own the original CF-70s from the 2010's to compare. My C6 (225 watts) and my C7 (200 watts) both can handle my amp at much higher volumes with out bottoming out and distorting. These CF-70s cannot perform anywhere near the volume or handle anywhere near the older C6/C7 speakers which are rated much lower powered. These are definitely re-engineered to be paired with the ESW-C10 subwoofer.

When I switch these speakers over to my HT systems and set these speakers to "Small" and set the crossover for the sub to 50hz and have the sub handle the lower frequencies, the CF-70 then can handle more volume and no longer bottoms out the woofers during bass extensions. Without the Subwoofer, these speakers will bottom out their woofers and will not last very long at high volume. However, the sound when paired with the ESW-C10 sub is not as good as when the speaker is by itself. The lower frequency integration is not very smooth if your music has a wide range of frequencies.

So in short, if you use these speakers for 2 channel music, they are good if you don't drive them too loud to the point where their woofers bottom out. they cannot handle much power. their 300 watt rating is not real. their real power handling should be much lower. A good amp to pair with them for music would be around 80watts / channel and they will perform stellar, albeit not very loud.

In a HT setup they are good performers, since the lower frequencies are handled mostly by the subwoofer.

However, the big differentiator here is the price point. At price point of their sale prices, they absolutely cannot be beat.

Hope that helps those considering these speakers make an informed decision.

PS; I also just ordered the Energy Reference Connoisseur RC-70 set as well and awaiting their delivery. hopefully the RC-70 set of speakers retained the original Energy quality components.

Thanks for letting us know. I was considering buying the set and using them separately in 2 channel setups. Now I know not to do that.

You are NOT going to find tower speakers under $1000/pr that can play deep bass at high volumes without their woofers bottoming out, let alone at this rock bottom price level. And NOT using a high pass crossover in order to have the sub carry the bass instead of taxing both your speakers and your receiver/amp, is downright silly.

Why would anyone even bother testing speakers at high volume without a sub? Especially if they actually have a sub already??? That's like buying a $20K econobox and trying to push it over 120mph, and then being surprised that the engine sounds like it's about to blow up.
