Man, hard drive prices are awful right now. I appreciate the post and all, but what it costs these days to pick up a hard drive is really discouraging.

I purchased two of these drives last year at a significantly lower price; unfortunately, both units failed shortly after the one-year warranty expired. I would not recommend this product to anyone.

Did you keep them plugged into your computer all the time? It's better to safely eject and plug them in only whenever you want to use them to reduce wear. It's also wise to do extensive error checking right when you get them and return if any badblocks or bad sectors are found after it completes. There are programs for this.

I agree with the first part. However, these drives are SMR, so testing them is more complicated than regular drives. I don't think these Seagate drives support TRIM, so if you run a full read/write test, you may permanently degrade the performance. I wouldn't recommend doing anything more than a long SMART test.

The first part of his post is incorrect, a hard drive gets the most wear during spin-up and spin-down. So keeping the discs spinning is best. Kinda like an engine, start up is where you get the most wear...
