Kirkland USDA Choice boneless ribeye is being treated as a solid ribeye price, especially where regular Costco pricing runs closer to $18.99 per pound and local grocery stores are often higher. The cut is praised for its thickness and holiday usefulness, with some preferring to buy the pack, trim it at home, and save the fat for burgers or tallow. Quality can vary by package, though, and the marbling is worth checking closely because some cuts look lean or heavily trimmed. Costco blade tenderizing is also a concern for those who prefer a non tenderized steak, making this a good value if you find a well marbled package.

Common Questions (4)

  • Yes. It is below the reported regular Costco Choice price of about $18.99/lb in New York and around $18/lb generally, and well under local Walmart pricing of $19-$20/lb in central Ohio. Some grocery chains occasionally hit lower sale prices, but this is a strong ribeye price for Costco.

  • Yes. Fat trim and marbling vary a lot between packages, and some packs can hide several pounds of fat with only mediocre meat underneath. Comparing individual packages within the same grade helps avoid a lean, less marbled steak.

  • Comparable sales can be lower at some chains, such as Safeway/Albertsons around $10/lb or less for bone-in ribeye and Kroger at $9.99/lb for thinner cuts. Costco's advantage is thicker steaks, often around 1.5 inches, and a more consistent in-warehouse cut.

  • Costco beef is reportedly blade-tenderized, which some shoppers avoid because it changes the texture. If you want a non-tenderized cut, ask the butcher whether they have one available.

Two Christmases ago, Publix surreally had standing rib roasts on loss leader sale for $6.99/pound. Last year I think they ran the same sale at $8.99/pound. For Publix and its if-not-BOGO-insane prices, their best sale of the year. If they run it again I'm sure the price will be higher given beef prices in general, but keep an eye out for a potential freezer-filling event.

I hope they do it again. They also usually do that during Easter, but this year it was more than usual.I used to stock up and freeze most of it.

The Prime Ribeye steaks at the Huntington Beach location is always worse than the regular Choice ones, with little marbling. It's been like that for years there.
you're just saying that because l love huntington beach, montery and san luis obisbo -- no i haven't been in years 😎

I don't know about Costco's sourcing (I do like Costco), but I'm still sketched out by all the Brazilian beef that the US purchased because China rejected it for using banned antibiotics. Maybe best to just stay away from beef for a long time.

Sources for any of that?
- it was Argentinian beef
- it was a single shipment that China rejected from a single supplier, not all beef from the entirety of Argentina.

Kroger occasionally goes down to 9.99/lb for ribeye choice but I think their cuts are thinner than Costco's. Maybe 1" thick max whereas Costco is usually closer to 1.5" iirc
