Costco's boneless USDA Choice ribeye at $14.99 a pound stands out as a strong ribeye price, especially versus the usual Costco shelf price around $18.99 and higher vacuum pack pricing. The cut is valued for ribeye quality, but the best packages still need a close look because marbling and fat trim vary a lot from pack to pack. Some locations have had better or worse ribeye quality than expected, so visual inspection matters. Overall, it is a solid reference price if you find a well marbled package.
Home cooks who want to inspect marbling before buying, because cut-and-packaged steaks let you see whether the package is worth it.
Regular Costco in-warehouse pricing in New York has been reported at $18.99 per pound, making the $14.99 deal price look like a discount versus that reference point.
Trimming off about 3 pounds of fat reportedly left steaks with very little marbling, so visual inspection after cutting and packaging may be necessary.
Prime ribeye has reportedly been consistently worse than regular Choice at a specific Huntington Beach location, with little marbling over multiple years.
Costco may be less competitive on meat prices versus Safeway or Albertsons when those stores run ribeye deals, especially when bone-in options are included.
Yes. Regular Costco pricing was reported at $18.99/lb in New York a few weeks earlier, and $14.99/lb is described as unusually low for Choice ribeye. It is also below a reported $16.99/lb vacuum-pack price and can beat some delivery pricing.
Quality can vary a lot within the same grade, so it helps to compare individual packages before buying. Some packages have been described as having very little marbling after trimming fat, while others look great even within Choice or Prime.
Yes. Safeway, Albertsons, Food Lion, Walmart, and Publix have been cited with ribeye or Choice beef sales around $8.99 to $12-15/lb, and Safeway or Albertsons sometimes hit $10/lb or less on bone-in ribeye. Costco's price is competitive mainly when you want its quality or a boneless cut.
Yes. The whole vacuum package was reported at $16.99/lb, while sliced steak-size portions may cost about $3-5 more per pound. That makes the in-warehouse $14.99/lb sale notably better if you can buy the larger package.

I got the whole vacuum package at 16.99/lb. Sliced/steak size maybe $3-5 more
I did this once, and trimmed maybe 3 lbs of fat. Beneath that fat was meh steaks. Very little marbling. At least when it's cut and packaged you can see if it's worth buying.
Not true.
I have not seen any cuts that were Select. Google says that it may be possible in some Business Center stores.
The same as at any grocer, you should compare individual packages of the same grade for finding your preferred package.
Now and then (not normally), I have seen Choice steaks look great, and once in a while, I have seen some Prime look not the best within class for my taste in their lean-to-fat ratio.
Just don't grab a package without checking others within the same grade.
I'm no meat-cut/price expert either. That's why I wondered what regular price was.
.
I used to pick up the Costco Bill Bailey Santa Maria or Carne Asada packs for as low as $9, or jam packed at $21. Not sure when they went crazy, but now the smallest Costco BB Carne Asada is like $40 for the same size.
Safeway or albertsons still occasionally has ribeye for $10/lb or less but with bone-in, but haven't seen it since early summer. Alternates with new york on sale, or if you're lucky sometimes porterhouse and t-bones at that price in the max packs. Costco is not competitive with meat prices unless you like their quality.
Isn't choice steak sometimes on sale at Vons/safway for like $8.99 lb?
That seems about right for Texas when we lived there a couple of years ago. I do know beef is much more expensive on the east coast and $12-15 lb is a typical sale price for choice at Food Lion, Walmart and Publix. Fresh Market usually has really great deals on better cuts but you have to watch the sale bills. TBH we rarely chase deals any more on proteins because they are all so expensive any more and look for expiring marked down packages in the store and plan our weekly menu accordingly...

The Prime Ribeye steaks at the Huntington Beach location is always worse than the regular Choice ones, with little marbling. It's been like that for years there.
