Costco's boneless USDA Choice ribeye is being highlighted as a strong steak deal, with the $14.99 per pound price landing well below recent regular pricing and unusually low for ribeye. The cut is also praised for quality when the package is worth choosing, with good marbling possible and the ability to inspect individual packs before buying. The main caution is that fat and marbling vary a lot, so some packages can trim down to disappointing steaks. A solid value if you check the meat case carefully.
Shoppers choosing ribeye for a special dinner, because the sale price is unusually low for this cut and makes an expensive steak more reachable.
$14.99/lb is below a reported Costco New York regular price of $18.99/lb and below a vacuum-pack price of $16.99/lb. It is still above occasional grocery-store ribeye sales around $10/lb or less, usually bone-in, and some shoppers note $12-15/lb is a typical sale range for USDA Choice at other chains.
Yes. Individual packages can vary a lot in fat and marbling, and one package trimmed down by about 3 lbs of fat still had very little marbling underneath. Checking several packages within the same grade helps avoid paying for a cut that looks better on the outside than it eats.
It can be, but not always. Some grocery stores occasionally run Choice ribeye around $8.99/lb or even $10/lb on bone-in cuts, while Costco's $14.99/lb is a stronger value mainly if you prefer Costco's quality and the specific package you pick.
Yes. The same grade can look very different from package to package, and one location's Prime ribeye has reportedly had less marbling than its Choice ribeye for years. Comparing multiple packages is the best way to find the lean-to-fat ratio you want.
What's normal price? Costco app already showing $14.99 only.
Doordash>Costco is showing $16.68.

I got the whole vacuum package at 16.99/lb. Sliced/steak size maybe $3-5 more
I did this once, and trimmed maybe 3 lbs of fat. Beneath that fat was meh steaks. Very little marbling. At least when it's cut and packaged you can see if it's worth buying.
Not true.
I have not seen any cuts that were Select. Google says that it may be possible in some Business Center stores.
The same as at any grocer, you should compare individual packages of the same grade for finding your preferred package.
Now and then (not normally), I have seen Choice steaks look great, and once in a while, I have seen some Prime look not the best within class for my taste in their lean-to-fat ratio.
Just don't grab a package without checking others within the same grade.
I'm no meat-cut/price expert either. That's why I wondered what regular price was.
.
I used to pick up the Costco Bill Bailey Santa Maria or Carne Asada packs for as low as $9, or jam packed at $21. Not sure when they went crazy, but now the smallest Costco BB Carne Asada is like $40 for the same size.
Safeway or albertsons still occasionally has ribeye for $10/lb or less but with bone-in, but haven't seen it since early summer. Alternates with new york on sale, or if you're lucky sometimes porterhouse and t-bones at that price in the max packs. Costco is not competitive with meat prices unless you like their quality.
Isn't choice steak sometimes on sale at Vons/safway for like $8.99 lb?
That seems about right for Texas when we lived there a couple of years ago. I do know beef is much more expensive on the east coast and $12-15 lb is a typical sale price for choice at Food Lion, Walmart and Publix. Fresh Market usually has really great deals on better cuts but you have to watch the sale bills. TBH we rarely chase deals any more on proteins because they are all so expensive any more and look for expiring marked down packages in the store and plan our weekly menu accordingly...

The Prime Ribeye steaks at the Huntington Beach location is always worse than the regular Choice ones, with little marbling. It's been like that for years there.

Shoppers choosing ribeye for a special dinner, because the sale price is unusually low for this cut and makes an expensive steak more reachable.
Buyers who inspect each package before cooking, because marbling and fat trim vary enough that some packs are worth skipping.
Families wanting a boneless ribeye roast to portion at home, because the whole vacuum package can be cheaper than sliced steak size.
Shoppers expecting every package to look richly marbled, because some packs can have very little marbling after trimming.
Deal hunters comparing only sticker price, because similar ribeye sales can be found at other grocers for less.
Buyers who want a consistently better prime grade, because the prime ribeye can look worse than the choice ribeye at this store.
