Costco's boneless USDA Choice ribeye is drawing attention as a strong steak deal at $14.99 per pound, especially since regular warehouse pricing has been closer to $18.99 per pound in some areas. The cut is praised as a rare low price for ribeye, and the package quality can vary enough that it is worth checking individual slabs for marbling and fat before buying. A few comparisons put it above some grocery store sales, though not always by much. The main caution is that trimming can leave less meat than expected, so the best value depends on the specific package.
Steak buyers who want a rare sale on Choice ribeye, because this price is unusually low compared with recent regular and sale prices at other stores.
Shoppers who compare individual ribeye packages in person, because marbling and fat trim vary enough that the best-looking package can be much better than the rest.
Costco members who value its meat quality over the lowest sticker price, because comparable ribeye can be cheaper elsewhere but not always with the same quality.
Deal hunters comparing against grocery-store meat specials, because ribeye can be cheaper at other chains and Costco is not always the lowest-price option.
Choice ribeye at this price may still be less competitive than occasional Safeway or Albertsons deals that can run around $10 per pound, often bone-in.
Yes. Regular Costco pricing was reported at $18.99/lb in New York a few weeks earlier, and the $14.99/lb sale was described as unusually low for Choice ribeye. It is also below the $16.99/lb vacuum-pack price and the sliced steak size may run $3-$5 more.
Safeway and Albertsons can occasionally hit about $10/lb or less, usually for bone-in ribeye, but those deals are not common. For USDA Choice boneless ribeye, $12-$15/lb is a typical sale range at several chains, so Costco's $14.99/lb is competitive mainly if you want Costco's quality and convenience.
Yes. The fat cap can hide poor marbling, and one package trimmed down by about 3 lbs of fat still left very meh steaks. Comparing individual packages within the same grade is the safest way to find a better lean-to-fat ratio.
No. Prime can have less marbling than Choice in some packages, so the best buy is the individual steak package rather than the grade alone. At least one Costco location was reported to have Prime ribeye that looked worse than the regular Choice there.
What's normal price? Costco app already showing $14.99 only.
Doordash>Costco is showing $16.68.

I got the whole vacuum package at 16.99/lb. Sliced/steak size maybe $3-5 more
I did this once, and trimmed maybe 3 lbs of fat. Beneath that fat was meh steaks. Very little marbling. At least when it's cut and packaged you can see if it's worth buying.
Not true.
I have not seen any cuts that were Select. Google says that it may be possible in some Business Center stores.
The same as at any grocer, you should compare individual packages of the same grade for finding your preferred package.
Now and then (not normally), I have seen Choice steaks look great, and once in a while, I have seen some Prime look not the best within class for my taste in their lean-to-fat ratio.
Just don't grab a package without checking others within the same grade.
I'm no meat-cut/price expert either. That's why I wondered what regular price was.
.
I used to pick up the Costco Bill Bailey Santa Maria or Carne Asada packs for as low as $9, or jam packed at $21. Not sure when they went crazy, but now the smallest Costco BB Carne Asada is like $40 for the same size.
Safeway or albertsons still occasionally has ribeye for $10/lb or less but with bone-in, but haven't seen it since early summer. Alternates with new york on sale, or if you're lucky sometimes porterhouse and t-bones at that price in the max packs. Costco is not competitive with meat prices unless you like their quality.
Isn't choice steak sometimes on sale at Vons/safway for like $8.99 lb?
That seems about right for Texas when we lived there a couple of years ago. I do know beef is much more expensive on the east coast and $12-15 lb is a typical sale price for choice at Food Lion, Walmart and Publix. Fresh Market usually has really great deals on better cuts but you have to watch the sale bills. TBH we rarely chase deals any more on proteins because they are all so expensive any more and look for expiring marked down packages in the store and plan our weekly menu accordingly...

The Prime Ribeye steaks at the Huntington Beach location is always worse than the regular Choice ones, with little marbling. It's been like that for years there.
