Tapo's 4K outdoor pan and tilt solar camera stands out for cable free security with app based control, motion tracking, and a continuous recording mode that can keep working on solar power. The solar setup can be practical once fully charged and aimed well, and the battery can stay topped up through cloudy stretches. The main tradeoffs are power and ecosystem limits, since pan and tilt, frequent recording, and tracking drain more battery, and solar models do not support ONVIF or easy NAS and Blue Iris recording. It is a capable fit if you want flexible outdoor coverage without wiring.

  • The camera can run a full-time recording mode while still using solar power to keep the battery topped up after bad-weather periods.

  • The setup can avoid running power cables and can reduce ongoing costs by relying on solar charging instead.

  • The camera can be viewed and managed through the Tapo app on a phone for on-the-go monitoring.

  • The camera can record to an SD card when power is off, which can help preserve footage during outages.

  • The solar charging performance can fall short in real conditions, including cases where direct sun for hours still fails to keep up.

  • The IR system can flash on and off all night, which can be noticeable to other cameras even if it is not obvious to people.

  • The camera may not integrate with NAS or Blue Iris setups because solar operation can route recording through battery-based behavior rather than continuous local workflows.

  • The camera lacks ONVIF support, so external live-view options are limited unless using Tapo's own hub ecosystem.

It should help. Did you verify it's optimally placed ? No dirt/bird crap on it ?
Howmuch more is a 20w panel
No poop. Just installed for a week. I set up about 45 degree facing south which gave me 3-4 hours sunlight. I look for generic 5W panel about $15 on Amazon.

The credit is added to the credit card later. Doesn't show in checkout.
I've used it before on a TAPO camera a couple months ago and I did get it.

I think it will work if it's really 5W. Try it out, return if it doesn't work.

yes, it does need good sun/light to charge fully. and yes it can take several days to fill up from 0. Completely normal since it also takes days to go to empty from a full charge. NOT an issue. Also depends on how much recording it does, how many events, etc.

As far as connectivity that was probably your wireless router being crap than the camera. I have absolutely NO issues with sev eral of these same models on a mesh system w nodes.
also, pan/tilt has nothing to do w your wireless. It sounds more like you had a dud.
all my 4 of my tapo cameras shutdown and have to be manually rebooted to start recording again probably because wifi goes out. but this is definitely a tapos firmware issue not handling loss of wifi properly.

SD card. You typically can't use a solar camera to a NAS or Blue Iris. It would go through a battery.
You can buy Tapo H200 or H500 Hub to save the video.

I have a few Tapo cameras and I like them. I also have a solar powered non-tracking sibling of this model - C460. I have it installed at my parent's house and it seems to work well.

To those who have been stating the solar charging isn't adequate, I can speak from my experience with C460. It works, but you have to have right expectations from it. Take the claim with a grain of salt. Tapo claims 45 mins of solar charging is enough for the day, not to make it full. If you notice, they have been making this generic claim with all of their solar cameras, which have this same solar pane, have less features than this and require same amount of charging for day. So I think it would be safe to expect that this camera will consume/require more. C460 non-tracking model consumes roughly 12% battery everyday with 24/7 capture every 5 seconds. The solar panel charges like 35%~ battery on a good day. Sometimes less, sometimes more. On cloudy days it is effectively draining. There are more caveats. Just like other battery devices, making it full from 80% battery to 100% takes more time. Conversely it lasts on 100% for longer time and then suddenly starts draining faster. So if you are making a positive impression that the camera comes down from 100% to only 98% in a single day, then that's also not a good expectation. You should expect a faster draining experience over days if you leave it uncharged - 100 to 80 in 3 days, 80 to 50 in just 2 days and 50 to 30 in just 1 day and so on. Don't expect more than a week if you don't have solar charging or have totally cloudy days. Also it is fair to say that the battery life will degrade over time. I wouldn't be surprised if your battery is barely keeping up after 1 year of usage. After all, this device operates outdoor with fluctuating weather elements.

I wouldn't say this is a bad camera or my (C460 model) on the basis of charging alone. Solar cameras have more limitations than the wired ones. If you have wired Tapo camera then you would realize it is more reliable, has more features for less price. These 4K solar models are better than the basic solar cameras for sure. You need to find a middle ground with your expectations and the highest sensitivity offered by the camera. This pan and tilt model will especially consume more power for pan and tilt action. If you have more activations for pan and tilt action, then you should unfortunately tweak down the other settings such as less frequent 24/7 snapshots, disable tracking etc. You should also probably try upgrading the solar panel. I haven't but hopefully it works.

Another note on 24/7 continuous recording feature. It is NOT really a continuous recording like their other wired cameras. You can call it 'Snapshot' recording where you configure the delay between each snapshot. The minimum is 1 second and the frequency does impact battery consumption. Moreover, the PIR sensor recording in the night also sends IR pulses for those snapshot intervals. Can't really have everything. The IR flashes will unfortunately show up in another camera's view, but hey, they don't cause malfunction in those other cameras. This 24/7 recording is a boon though. Solar cameras have limitations due to power, they can't record truly continuously unless modified. They rely on their PIR sensors to detect motion. And also all basic models have a couple seconds delays between when the motion is detected and the recording starts. Often missing the part of the action. Having 24/7 snapshot functionality every second is slightly better if not by large. Also these Tapo cameras seem to offer more distance for detection due to this snapshot functionality paired with PIR. Still, the motion won't be captured if the motion isn't in vicinity of the PIR sensor, that's where the 24/7 snapshot is especially useful when motion happens outside of the detection range.

About the WiFi connectivity - I faced problems in my first 1-2 days due to 2.4GHz vs. 5 GHz connectivity with my router. My router as well as this camera kept 5 GHz connectivity and didn't switch it to 2.4GHz when I moved the tapo camera outside. The connectivity was terrible via app. Then I restarted both the router and the camera in their new places, after a couple of restarts the camera finally stayed well on 2.4 band. They seem to be offering 5GHz connectivity for faster 4k video transfer, but you see the disadvantages like the above.

Overall, these are great cameras, but have right expectations. Prepare to send them back if things don't work your way, but do keep in mind, these are feature-rich models than most basic solar panels. These provide middle ground between wired tapo cameras and basic solar cameras. Don't be fooled into thinking these are better than wired cameras based on their price.

So someone asked but I did not get a clear understanding, can my NVR pickup the feed via ONVIF? Or can camera push to my NAS?
