If you're using this for it's intended purpose (calling for help) you should probably get a new one...

Add $40 to start a subscription of $8 a month for minimal service. Another option to be aware of is that many of the latest Apple and Android phones of the last 2 years can lock onto satellites for emergency communications when you are out of cell coverage. If you activate it on your phone it generally works automatically when you are out of network coverage. Right now, they don't charge extra for this service. On some phones it might be texting for help.

The comment wasn't cryptic at all, assuming you know what the intended purpose of the product is. It's an emergency communicator. The comment was questioning the wisdom of getting a refurbished product for said use.

I'm aware of its purpose, that's pretty obvious. Doesn't really make sense to be vague (or conversely, play inside baseball) if we're trying to be "helpful" though to others. I'm sure a refurb unit (that's actually refurbished properly) will work just as fine as a new one, but if you say so. ๐Ÿ™„

What's wrong with refurbished?

I was just explaining the comment. I never said there was anything wrong with refurbished.

I never said that there was anything wrong with refurbished. Ask the guy who made the comment I was explaining.

I would highly recommend some earlier threads on the same product which did a good job of diving into the cost of ownership and relative value of the device.

Well I can tell you as someone who did the beta on T-mobile, I would advise you not to bet your life on this. Last winter the service was nearly nonexistant. Based on my experience, if your life depended on it, wouldn't trust satellite service on you cell phone as of today.
