The North Face Berkeley Field Bag is a small 5 liter sling that stands out for sturdy build quality, smooth YKK zippers, and a comfortable, adjustable strap. The bag is described as a workhorse with a retro, stylish look, and the limited lifetime warranty adds reassurance. The compact size fits water bottle, phone, and keys, and should handle an iPad mini. The main tradeoff is capacity, since it is best for light carry and travel days when a full backpack feels unnecessary.

Common Questions (5)

  • Yes. The bag uses genuine YKK zippers, including Japanese-made zippers, with a custom logo pull tab. That matters because the zippers are described as holding up for years, unlike cheaper zippers that can stick or fail.

  • It should fit an iPad mini based on the bag's size. The 5L dimensions are small, but still in the range for a mini tablet plus a few essentials.

  • The 5L bag is small, roughly 11 by 7 inches. It fits everyday carry items like a water bottle, phone, and keys, making it better for travel days or light carry than for replacing a full backpack.

  • The strap is longer and more adjustable than the Jansport sling, which makes it a better fit for taller people. One comparison specifically says the Jansport can feel short for anyone 5'7" and taller.

  • Yes, it is covered by The North Face limited lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship for the practical lifetime of the product. That makes it easier to justify the purchase if a defect shows up later.

So where do you think YKK are made? Japan? Dude, it's 2026 not 1986. Wake up.!
That was not their point. There are several types of manufacturers. They were pointing out that there are various makers of subpar zippers. I hope that helps you understand it better.
I have had many items with poorly made zippers, and none of them were branded YKK. So even if they did make cheaper, unbranded zippers, like the other reply was implying, I don't trust unbranded ones as much. Some with plastic teeth, cheap pulls that break, etc...

at this size why not just get a small backpack
If that's your preference, go for it. To each their own.
To directly answer your question: Size, style, quality, and pricing can all be major factors.

Some (maybe you included) would prefer a small backpack for its better utility (number of compartments. Maybe for less cost, with comparable quality, and acceptable styling, as well. Cool. You do you. This could be more practical, or stylish, or cheaper for some folks who don't catch the backpack clearance sales. I have a few in storage. Mostly larger, but at least one sling-style smaller one, still larger than this. Never really used it.

My opinion is more aligned with yours. The price and my limited use cases for something like a sling-murse keep me from buying. I do like the style and quality mentioned. Glad my phone, key, and wallet all fit in my jeans pocket for now.

The biggest benefit to a sling bag is easy access without removing it from the shoulder. Also you can put it in and direction without removing it from your shoulder.

You'd be surprised. There are definitely cheap Chinese zipper mfgs. that make truly garbage zippers out there. Sure, YKK has the massive market share, but those Chinesium brands are pretty common too. I used to make backpacks and pouches (tried to turn it into a business but everyone else was doing the same at the time). I tried some of the Chinesium brands, and they just didn't hold up. The coils were not secured to the tape well enough. The genuine YKK stuff always held up, except the YKK AquaGuard's waterproof lining (the zipper coils worked fine, but the waterproof guard failed quickly, peeling off within months).

Re: the warranty
The North Face warranty is limited lifetime for this bag. See their official warranty page. https://www.thenorthface.com/en-us/help/warranty

"All of our branded products (except footwear and products from our The North Face Renewed series) are covered by a Limited Lifetime Warranty against manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship for the practical and reasonably expected lifetime of the product."

For this to be "The North Face Renewed" it would have to be used and re-sold by The North Face (effectively the same as "manufacturer refurbished").
While ykk is the best zipper in the market, they do fail as documents many times on YouTube videos.

Ykk zipper factories are made in their respective countries. There is a ykk factory in the USA.

Ykk supplies chains is 100% vertical. That means all the materials are made by them, including metals and the machines that makes the zippers.

Ykk zipper is by far the best zippers in the market. They are used by people that their life depends on it.

The answer is ykk has factories in the countries/region that the company sells too. USA have a ykk factory, Europe have at least 1, South America, China, Japan, etc.

Just know 5L is small, roughly 11 by 7 inches, the main compartment is water bottle, phone and keys territory. Good for travel days when a full backpack is overkill.

I had no "question". I think you replied to the wrong person. Your statement has no relation to my points.

The Jansport looks like what a midwestern dad wears on vacation, with his white socks and sandals. Just hideous.
