The North Face Berkeley Field Bag is a small 5 liter sling that stands out for sturdy build quality, smooth YKK zippers, and a comfortable, adjustable strap. The bag is described as a workhorse with a retro, stylish look, and the limited lifetime warranty adds reassurance. The compact size fits water bottle, phone, and keys, and should handle an iPad mini. The main tradeoff is capacity, since it is best for light carry and travel days when a full backpack feels unnecessary.

  • The bag uses genuine YKK zippers with a custom logo pull tab.

  • The zippers reportedly last for years without damage and function as a workhorse.

  • The 5L size is small enough for travel days while fitting a water bottle, phone, and keys.

  • The strap can be adjusted more freely and is longer than competing slings.

  • The strap buckle and strap section reportedly feel thinner than the North Face option.

  • The limited lifetime warranty covers manufacturing defects and excludes certain product categories.

  • The sling's 5L capacity is limited to water bottle, phone, and keys territory.

  • The bag may fit an iPad mini based on observed sizing, but this is an estimate rather than a confirmed measurement.

Damn, the price on these bounces more than Jake Gylenhall & Patrick Swayze in Roadhouse. Ive seen from $14.99+ over the last year.

I will say base material on the outside is similar but overall quality is nowhere close to the same. I have both bags. The North Face's zippers have lasted years without any damage whatsoever. This thing is a workhorse and is comfortable to wear normally. The Jansport's zippers broke within 6 months, and the plastic buckle on the strap itself is significantly thinner.

Not to mention the North Face strap can be adjusted more freely and is longer than the Jansport, which makes the Jansport a bit short for taller people (anyone 5'7" and taller should not bother)

Smaller issues with the jansport:

1.) the lower part of the strap is very thin, maybe 0.6in which which makes it feel really cheap. Comparatively the North Face one is about 2.5x wider and noticeably thicker.

2.) I really dislike the cloth mesh material on bags. It is practically guaranteed to break over time. I have had other bags where the mesh did break; I wouldn't buy the Jansport again just to roll the dice and play my chances

I don't own a mini, but estimating the size from when I've seen them at apple stores, it *should* fit a mini.

Good to know. These are two different designs aesthetically. I prefer the North Face design. Looks more retro and stylish for me.

Agreed on the zippers. This TNF bag uses genuine YKK zippers (custom logo on the pull tab). Jansport bags have awful zippers nowdays that always seem to get stuck partway or break completely after a while.

YKK manufactures more than 90% of zippers, branded or not. I highly doubt someone else made them. Additionally, Jansport comes with 5 year warranty, unlike this bag.

You'd be surprised. There are definitely cheap Chinese zipper mfgs. that make truly garbage zippers out there. Sure, YKK has the massive market share, but those Chinesium brands are pretty common too. I used to make backpacks and pouches (tried to turn it into a business but everyone else was doing the same at the time). I tried some of the Chinesium brands, and they just didn't hold up. The coils were not secured to the tape well enough. The genuine YKK stuff always held up, except the YKK AquaGuard's waterproof lining (the zipper coils worked fine, but the waterproof guard failed quickly, peeling off within months).

Re: the warranty
The North Face warranty is limited lifetime for this bag. See their official warranty page. https://www.thenorthface.com/en-us/help/warranty

"All of our branded products (except footwear and products from our The North Face Renewed series) are covered by a Limited Lifetime Warranty against manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship for the practical and reasonably expected lifetime of the product."

For this to be "The North Face Renewed" it would have to be used and re-sold by The North Face (effectively the same as "manufacturer refurbished").

So where do you think YKK are made? Japan? Dude, it's 2026 not 1986. Wake up.!
