Snapping one in the hole is the real risk: extractors are hardened steel and nearly impossible to drill back out.

Yeah this is something I wouldn't cheap out on. I'd prefer to go with Irwin, Bosch or Drill Hog.

From my experience, just get those extractor kit with individual reverse drill bit and slim extractor bit with fine deep threads. These double side combo kit always come with coarser and shallower threads on the extractor side which won't bite on to the hole at all.

The one tool that really helped me on replacing deck board is a Screw Extractor Pliers.

I have something similar to this and tried using it but just ended up wasting bunch of time and effort. As long as you have a bit of screw head for the pliers to hold on to, that's the better and easier option.

You are probably correct. I have double sided kit. Once I tried to unscrew a stripped screw, this type of extractor was unable to bite to it tightly, unable to unscrew it.

Don't you have to have at least part of the bad screw sticking out to grab with the pliers? I have couple of screws I want to drill out from an old door threshold.
