If you've got an Ollie's near you, check them out first. They've had this set for $50 the past few weeks, though inventory varies by location. They also have had the Hobbit deluxe illustrated for $20 and the regular Great Tales hardcover set for $15.

Yeap, verified at the Ollies in Wichita. They had all three and at least 3x of each set. It claimed that original price was ~$300 from the sticker but sale price was very good. They also have boxed collection of the Narnia chronicles in portable paperback. Sorry don't remember price but around $10.

It's genuinely astonishing how worthless books are. Even these supposedly "fancy" editions, you have to pay someone to take them from you if you ever go to sell again, even pristine.

Obviously it can be just for your own enjoyment and the instant full depreciation may not bother you, but when you're pricing something at $300 retail it feels like they must be baking in some assumption on the part of the buyer that these hold some sort of value. They don't.

---

edit: To elaborate, my understanding of the economics here is supply and demand: they produce millions of these so-called "collector's" or "deluxe" or whatever editions in time for each Christmas season. The production far outstrips the actual demand. So the market gets completely flooded with the excess (see above posts about these appearing at Ollie's). Meaning the day after Christmas, these fancy $300 retail editions are worth $0 on the resale market.

If you are paying over $100 for a supposed "collector's" edition book and you are buying it as a sort of heirloom item that you expect to retain any value, make sure it is a limited numbered release, signed etc.

You buy hardback books because they look better on your shelf. Also, I suggest using eBay rather than some scum store like Half Price Books when selling them. They'll give you $0.20 and throw them in the shelf for $150.

Remember when Amazon was just an online bookstore? Pepperidge Farm remembers...
