I guess true railroad enthusiasts might book on Amtrak just because it is the only way to travel on rail today. I am assuming that the boutique train rides like the Skunk Train and the Napa Wine train have closed down.
What, exactly, does Amtrak offer today? I expect the answer will be the absolute minimum garbage service and the worst nightmare of every traveler's possible experience. And it will very likely be so much worse than going by bus, like Greyhound... or worse.
So surprise me. Tell us all how your Amtrak trip was so fun and how you want to do it again.
EDIT: I guess I should mention that I did use the railroad once in the 1970's as a kid when my parents sent me to Oroville, CA. I guess it was better than the bus.
And in 1982, I used a 3 month Eurailpass to tour Europe. It was a great part of my trip.

edit: The northeast corridor routes are the most well known but I've done the route between NYC and Buffalo several times, too and it's great. While the wifi leaves something to be desired there's something to be said about not having to deal with TSA or people basically sitting on top of you.
