The PS4 Slim stands out as a low-cost way to get a huge game library, cheap used discs, and Blu-ray playback, with the 1TB model looking like the best value for the storage. The Best Buy refurb angle adds shipped delivery and an easy return path, which lowers the risk versus marketplace buys. Modding and GoldHen also come up as a bonus for unlocking more games, though firmware and jailbreak support can depend on the unit. The main cautions are the Good condition grading, location-based stock, and the possibility of a slow system unless an SSD upgrade is planned.
Tinkerers interested in console modding, because the system can be modded to unlock the full game library.
Shoppers who want the lowest-risk used purchase, because marketplace buying can feel like rolling the dice while this deal depends on a refurbished unit.
PS4s can reportedly be modded with GoldHen, but the method depends on the console's firmware and older models use different versions. These refurb units may arrive on lower firmware, but the latest firmware is not jailbreakable yet.
The PS4 Slim is a strong value at about $100 if the refurb is in good working condition with a working controller. It offers a large game library, cheap used physical discs, solid-enough graphics, and doubles as a Blu-ray player.
The 1TB model is the better buy for most shoppers because it costs only about $20 more than the 500GB and is the preferred storage sweet spot. With storage prices high, the extra capacity is worth it.
Yes. Buying from Best Buy means the console is shipped and can be returned if there is a problem, which reduces the risk compared with rolling the dice on marketplace purchases.
Great console. Sony really turned things around with the PS4. Great library, good price. It might be Sony's best or second best console after the PS2. One other thing that made this generation stand out was how much was remastered from the PS2 and PS3 era. With the PS3, unless you got the earlier, expensive backwards compatible models (I had one and got the notorious YLOD), you were often stuck never being able to play PS2 era games unless you had a PS2. PS4 generation really upped the remaster catalog making it almost pointless to have backwards compatibility or an old PS2/PS3 lying around for a lot of people. The only game that I wanted that I remember not being able to play was MGS4. I only regret I didn't play more when I was able to really enjoy playing guilt free more often.
Thanks, OP. Just bought the PlayStation 4 Slim 1TB, and came out to $102 (after using $5 GC I had lying around). Been wanting my own system for a while, as kids won't share the PS5.

I almost agree. But the PSX will always be king to me.Along with Wipeout 2097
Nice! Ive been wanting a PS4 for awhile and have casually browsed marketplace and such. But the convenience of just getting one shipped and being able to return if there is a problem is a huge pro versus rolling the dice.

Genuinely a great deal if you want to get into games and not spend a lot, maybe tough out the next three years of insane prices. Hundreds of games available under $10 even, and possible to crack if you want to pirate I guess. it's not even dead yet - new games are still coming, though a lot less. It's even a good Blu-ray player and streaming box too.
