These refurbished PS4 consoles stand out as a low cost way to get into Sony's PS4 library, with the 1TB Slim emerging as the best value for storage and a smoother long term setup. The console is also seen as a strong modding target, with GoldHen and older firmware versions mentioned as part of that route. Buying from Best Buy adds shipped delivery and return protection, which lowers the risk versus marketplace listings. The main cautions are that units are only listed in Good condition, stock varies by location, and the cheapest model may feel slow without an SSD.

Common Questions (5)

  • They can be modded, and GoldHen is the commonly referenced approach. Older PS4 models use different GoldHen versions, and the firmware on refurb units may or may not be jailbreakable depending on what they were reset to.

  • Yes. The 1TB model is only about $20 more than the 500GB version and is the preferred sweet spot for storage, especially since PS4 game installs are large and storage upgrades are expensive.

  • That can be the best route if you want to keep costs down, because the stock system can feel slow. An SSD upgrade is recommended to make the cheapest PS4 more usable.

  • Yes. Buying from Best Buy means the console is shipped and can be returned if there is a problem, which reduces the risk compared with buying from marketplace sellers.

  • Yes, the consoles are listed in Good condition, and stock varies by location. Some stores show all three models while others only have the Slim available.

It does but there's different versions for older consoles.

Great console. Sony really turned things around with the PS4. Great library, good price. It might be Sony's best or second best console after the PS2. One other thing that made this generation stand out was how much was remastered from the PS2 and PS3 era. With the PS3, unless you got the earlier, expensive backwards compatible models (I had one and got the notorious YLOD), you were often stuck never being able to play PS2 era games unless you had a PS2. PS4 generation really upped the remaster catalog making it almost pointless to have backwards compatibility or an old PS2/PS3 lying around for a lot of people. The only game that I wanted that I remember not being able to play was MGS4. I only regret I didn't play more when I was able to really enjoy playing guilt free more often.

Thanks, OP. Just bought the PlayStation 4 Slim 1TB, and came out to $102 (after using $5 GC I had lying around). Been wanting my own system for a while, as kids won't share the PS5.

With the cost of storage being so high, the slim is the way to go.

1TB for only $20 more (at $99) is a great deal. I think that's the sweet spot.

I almost agree. But the PSX will always be king to me.Along with Wipeout 2097

Nice! Ive been wanting a PS4 for awhile and have casually browsed marketplace and such. But the convenience of just getting one shipped and being able to return if there is a problem is a huge pro versus rolling the dice.

Genuinely a great deal if you want to get into games and not spend a lot, maybe tough out the next three years of insane prices. Hundreds of games available under $10 even, and possible to crack if you want to pirate I guess. it's not even dead yet - new games are still coming, though a lot less. It's even a good Blu-ray player and streaming box too.
