The refurbished PS4 Slim stands out as a low cost way to get into Sony's huge game library, with cheap used discs and Blu ray playback adding a lot of value. The 1TB model looks like the sweet spot, especially since storage is expensive and the jump from 500GB is small. Best Buy shipping and returns reduce the risk versus marketplace buys, and a $5 gaming coupon can shave the price further. The main cautions are that these units are listed in Good condition, stock varies by location, and the cheapest model may feel slow without an SSD.
Tinkerers chasing homebrew access, because the console can be modded and older models use different GoldHen versions.
Households wanting a second console for shared living-room gaming, because it gives one person their own system when the PS5 is not available to share.
Players who want a hassle-free return path from a marketplace-style purchase, because this deal is mainly attractive when you value being able to return a problem unit.
They can be modded, and GoldHen is the commonly mentioned route. Older PS4 models use different versions, and the latest firmware is reportedly not jailbreakable yet, so the exact unit and firmware matter.
Yes. The 1TB model is the sweet spot for about $20 more than the 500GB version, especially since storage is expensive and PS4 games can take a lot of space. It also avoids filling up quickly if you plan to keep several digital installs.
Yes, if it is in good working condition with a working controller. The PS4 Slim has a large game library, cheap used discs, and also works as a Blu-ray player, making it a strong value for the price.
Best Buy is safer because the console ships and can be returned if there is a problem. That reduces the risk of getting a bad unit compared with buying from marketplace listings.
Yes, if you want to avoid a slow system. The cheapest model can be a good buy, but an SSD upgrade is recommended to improve load times and overall responsiveness.
Great console. Sony really turned things around with the PS4. Great library, good price. It might be Sony's best or second best console after the PS2. One other thing that made this generation stand out was how much was remastered from the PS2 and PS3 era. With the PS3, unless you got the earlier, expensive backwards compatible models (I had one and got the notorious YLOD), you were often stuck never being able to play PS2 era games unless you had a PS2. PS4 generation really upped the remaster catalog making it almost pointless to have backwards compatibility or an old PS2/PS3 lying around for a lot of people. The only game that I wanted that I remember not being able to play was MGS4. I only regret I didn't play more when I was able to really enjoy playing guilt free more often.
PS4 was not so great for me. I literally have hundreds of games for my PS3, and like 4 were playable on the ps4. That soured me a good bit. The ps4 vr resolution was pretty low as well. I tried watching some 3d Blu-rays, but the low resolution was apparent in the psvr2 headset. I sold my ps4 pro just after a couple of months. Years later I recently bought a used ps5 slim off marketplace for $320. It's is pretty backwards compatible except for psvr. I think in order to play psvr 1 games you need the psvr 1 headset.
Anyhow my last favorite Sony machine was either the psp or the PS3. Any PS3 could play ps1 games. I do have a couple of launch PS3 that still work, but honestly I would preferred to emulate ps2 games. I'm not really interested in repurchasing remasters of games I already own. I focus on PC games now, but I do have the ps5 for console exclusives. I also have a 3d tv from 2016 so I can play some PS3 games in 3d.
Lots of value in the ps4 slim for $100 if it's a good refurbished unit with a working controller. Great game library, cheap used physical discs aplenty, ps4 graphics are still good enough IMO, and it's a Blu-ray player. Literally 100s of hrs in entertainment if you buy a few games. I checked marketplace and saw someone selling 10x mostly excellent titles for about $50!
Nah, he's right. PS4 and Xbox One are when we started to get ridiculously long dev cycles and fewer exclusives. PS3/360 was peak in terms of console wars.
