The Edition XS is a wide, detailed open back planar that shines for home listening, gaming, and tracks that benefit from strong separation and bass extension. Paired with a proper DAC and amp, it can sound far more refined and spacious than Sony XM4 class headphones, and EQ works well if you want to tame treble or shape the bass. Comfort is generally good with roomy cups, though the stock headband can feel awkward and a strap helps. The main cautions are weak isolation, no wireless or noise cancelling, and refurb quality that can range from spotless to needing a return. A strong value if your setup can drive it.

Common Questions (5)

  • These refurbs often arrive looking new or sealed, with brand-new pads, cable, and headband, and several orders were reported as spotless. There are also occasional QC problems like loose connectors or a dead driver, but support has handled returns or replacements quickly.

  • Yes. The Edition XS is current-hungry and can sound underpowered, harsh, or flat from weak laptop, phone, or portable dongle outputs. A decent desktop DAC/amp or a strong balanced portable setup brings out the bass, dynamics, and detail much better, especially if you plan to EQ.

  • The large oval cups are roomy and the open-back design keeps ears cool, but the stock headband can feel loose or uncomfortable on smaller heads. A suspension strap like the Capra/Apos X Capra is a common fix, and the weight can still take time to get used to.

  • The Edition XS is much wider, more detailed, and more "audiophile" sounding than the Sony XM4/XM6, but it is also more revealing and can sound clinical or boring if you prefer the Sony tuning. For competitive gaming or more precise imaging, the HD560S-style presentation may be the better fit.

  • No. It is an open-back headphone with very poor isolation, so it does not block airplane or background noise and people nearby can hear your music. It is better suited to home or desk listening than commuting.

I know the reliability on these seems kinda hit and miss on reddit, the price is good but not sure how great the return/warranty is from Ali

I bought these last time they were on sale. Left driver stopped working almost instantly. I emailed them my issue, they gave me a return label and refunded immediately. I decided to buy these again, easy return if there is an issue.

I bought a pair of headphones from Hifiman last year. They didn't arrive in time for my trip, so I didn't open the box until recently. They sounded great on an International flight. I'm not an audiophile and didn't realize they wouldn't be wireless. I might sell mine since they're larger than what I want to pack on a flight. I bought HE400se for $69
Open backs aren't great for travel. They don't isolate, meaning they don't block out background (airplane) noise, and your neighbors will be able to hear whatever you're playing.

I personally didn't like the sound of these even compared to my Sony wh1000xm4 (which is supposedly not even close in terms of sound quality). They just sounded very clinical and boring to me, even with eq.
You just compared a closed back vs open back so your opinion is voided.

Kept on checking, and it showed up again. Especially when I was going to place an order for Sundara , it showed up as other deals. Hopefully they will ship. Is there a recommended amp that i can but to use the other 20% off code? I plan to snag an IEM too (first time buying IEM), so any recommendation for IEM and amp that compliments with Edition XS would be helpful. Currently have Fiio Q3 portable dac. Thank you.

I'd check out the FIIO K7, FIIO K13, FIIO K11, Topping DX 5 II.
The K13, and K11 are available in R2R or Delta-Sigma Dac chip versions.

The standard, non-R2R version is not an R2R DAC. It uses a conventional Delta-Sigma DAC chip—specifically the Cirrus Logic CS43198 chip in the K11 which prioritizes a cleaner, more neutral, transparent, and analytical sound profile with lower measured distortion. The FiiO K13 ESS Version (non R2R) uses dual ESS ES9039Q2M DAC chips.

A true R2R (Resistor-Ladder) DAC. Instead of using a standard integrated silicon DAC chip, uses a discrete 24-bit R2R resistor array network built from 192 precision thin-film resistors (48 per channel) to convert digital audio to analog. It also features switchable Oversampling (OS) and Non-Oversampling (NOS) modes and a warmer, more analog sound profile.

Non-R2R is lower noise, and seems more accurate. Sometimes this can make audio sound clearer in a good way, sometimes it makes audio sound clearer in a less pleasing way and exposes more faults in the recording. R2R seems warmer and generally keeps audio sounding musically pleasing.

I'd get something like the K11 if I were on a $150 or less budget (Apos has them open box for $105.) If money is not an issue, I'd get the K13 ESS because it gives you more power to push the Edition XS and 2 flagship ultra low noise DAC chips.

If I liked the R2R warmer sound I'd get that version of the K11 or K13.

The Topping DX 5 II is a great choice too, but Topping appears to have less quality control and many users report having issues with aspects of their units. It's not r2r, it's DAC chips and has an ultra quiet noise floor and EQ.

-As for IEMs, there are too many choices for me to recommend one for you. I only have 1 and I like it, but a lot of people could recommend from first hand experience and you might seek that out instead. I like my Linsol Septet, I wanted something open-back so it'd be more similar to the Edition XS with a more open soundstage and less 'in my head' the earbuds usually sound to me.

I won't let myself buy any more IEMs because it seems like a real can of worms and they can get pretty expensive, so I'd rather keep myself convinced to be happy with what I have rather than look at stacks of seldom used IEMs in my closet.

I hope that makes sense, we've been having celebratory drinks so let me know if I messed up explaining something.

Buyer beware, my refurbed set had to be sent back for resoldering on the port connectors. Not sure how it passed refurbed as cuz it was DOA basically. If you don't want to roll the dice for a cheap price, don't buy the editions
