The edition xs are acoustically a moderate step up over the sundara in most respects, with the largest benefits in soundstage, imaging, and bass response.
Tonally the sundara are more neutral with less bass; after eq tonality will be significantly closer for both headphones. The sundara also require more power than the edition xs, particularly if you want to boost bass to harman levels with eq.
In terms of comfort, the biggest difference are in the headbands, the sundara comes with a hammock style headband that fits most people better and tends to be more comfortable. The edition xs uses the standard older hifiman headband and has low clamping force, it needs a large head to fit well. If you have a smaller head, a third party strap for the edition xs (ex. the capra strap) solves most issues with fit and comfort. The earcups on the edition xs are oval instead of circular and substantially larger than those on the sundara, I personally find them more comfortable.
Refurbished hifiman headphones come with the same 1yr warranty as new, and I've never had any issues with condition so far. Out of three refurbished edition xs ordered by me and two family members in the past (with two from aliexpress), all three were perfectly functional and arrived in near pristine condition.
