To whom it may concern,
This article misrepresents a significant portion of the cashew industry, particularly in Vietnam. Even at its peak in 2012, there were only approximately 8000 children potentially involved in the cashew industry. Since the early 2000s, the cashew nutshell cutting machine has been fully integrated into the industry, streamlining processes over a decade to ensure efficiency. In Vietnam, cashew processing is no longer done by hand; instead, it has been effectively and efficiently automated to mitigate any child labor. The harvesting of apples is carried out by farmers and locals, not prisoners.
Your misinformation and ignorance of the industry are glaringly evident in your targeted smear campaign article. While labor issues exist in India and West Africa, Vietnam has made significant strides in eradicating child labor through automation. Your remarks on the carbon footprint are baseless; the processing and selling of CNSL help reduce greenhouse gases. The streamlined process allows cashews to reach the market competitively and efficiently, benefiting the industry as a whole.
Your suggestion of fracturing the marketplace and decentralizing material waste is counterproductive and harmful to the environment. The streamlined process of harvest and processing in Vietnam ensures competitiveness and efficiency, contrary to your unfounded remarks. I hope readers do not consider your article credible as it clearly lacks accuracy and insight into the industry.
Your unprofessionalism and misinformation are appalling. I urge you to conduct proper research and reach out for accurate information before publishing such outrageous content. It is disheartening that you failed to mention initiatives like the Sustainable Nut Initiative or contact reputable sources like UC for accurate statistics on child labor. India's increased export of nuts to Vietnam signifies progress in reducing dangerous labor practices, a fact you conveniently ignored.
Before spreading further misinformation, I suggest you rectify your approach and strive for accuracy and professionalism in your reporting.

Dear Mr. Tuft,
Thank you for sharing your views on the cashew industry and for mentioning the strides you believe are being made in the cashew industry in Vietnam. We applaud any and all advances to further organic and sustainable farming practices; provide higher prices for farmers; and better wages, improved working conditions, and labor rights for factory workers in the cashew industry.
I am sorry to hear that you interpreted this article as being part of a "targeted smear campaign." That was most certainly not my intention or its purpose. The information provided in the article is cited throughout for easy reference and comes from a wide range of respected journals, governmental agencies, and non-profit organizations.
We are very proud of the work our Alternative Trade Organization partners and allies are doing (and the risks they are taking) to support democratically-run small farmer cooperatives that produce cashews in some of the poorest and least resourced regions and countries in the world. These ATO's are leading with their values, rather than profit-motives, to invest in farmers, communities, and in sustainable agriculture in order to turn conventional trade models on their head. They, and we, wish to see these cooperatives and their members living dignified lives, developing their communities, and having control over the decision-making process that comes with being a member/owner of one's own business. Likewise, we are proud of our consumer co-op partners, interfaith allies, and citizen consumers who believe in the farmers and in our model and support us to achieve our goals. To every extent possible, we are trying to do all this within transparent and ecologically sustainable supply chains.
The article was written with these farmers and partners in mind. We believe that it is possible to offer high quality, nutritious food and beverage products in a manner that builds upon these principles of fairness, equity, and transparency.

My take is that they have some other motivation than they say, in order to increase the pricier option's market share. But it definitely is not as cut and dry as you mentioned or they did.
Regardless, I will be enjoying these at this rare sale price. One can typically find some reason to boycott products, businesses, and services, but this is not current information.
