Kirkland Signature grass fed butter is a salted, creamy butter that melts well and is often praised for its value at $8.99 for four 8 ounce packs. The flavor is described as less salty than Kerrygold, with a cheesy, grassy profile that works well on warm bread and in rice, soups, stews, and low temperature eggs. The main caveat is that it is salted, so it is less ideal for ghee or recipes that call for unsalted butter. The sourcing has also changed from New Zealand to Ireland, and the wrapper no longer has tablespoon markings.

Common Questions (5)

  • It is salted, so it is not the best choice for ghee; salted butter can leave salt behind during clarification. Unsalted butter is the better option if you want cleaner ghee or less waste.

  • It is salted. That makes it better for eating on warm bread or finishing dishes, while unsalted butter is still preferred for most cooking and for recipes where you want full control over added salt.

  • The product was changed from New Zealand-sourced butter to Ireland-sourced butter. The label now says Product of Ireland, and it is produced by Tirlán rather than being Kerrygold.

  • It is less salty than Kerrygold but still creamy and melts very well. Kerrygold has the stronger flavor profile, while Kirkland is often preferred for the price.

  • The packaging was tweaked when the sourcing changed: it now has a different shape and no longer includes tablespoon markings on the wrapper.

This is from New Zealand and Kerrygold is Irish... The Kirkland butter has a certain cheesy and grassy flavor, but I find I prefer the different profile of Kerrygold.
It's not from New Zealand anymore. Ireland now. See the label: Product of Ireland. They changed it recently.

You're better off having avocado toast.
Maybe if the toast was from Ezekiel bread which at least is sprouted and fermented so you get lots of fiber and is a complete protein and gluten free, though each slice only has 5g. Still pales in comparison to what I make, which includes a scoop of whey which has 24g plus you get 4g additional from the raw egg which gives the buttered coffee a creamy cappucino like consistency, and 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil to boot.

All butter at my Costco is salted. It is mind-blowing. Is it that hard to add salt if you need it in a recipe? Next will be salted olive oil…
Or salted salt.

It was New Zeland, now sourced from Ireland

As an avid kerrygold salted butter fan and someone who finally gave this a shot, this is not as salty as kerrygold but is still creamy and melts very well. I would say this has about half the amount of salt kerry gold has by taste alone.
Oddly, I find I can use Kerrygold unsalted as table butter and not miss any added salt. Something about Kerrygold enhances any sodium present

Has anyone made Ghee with this? I tried Kerry gold, it was fine.
I like organic valley a lot but they are expensive and Costco doesn't sell them.
it's salted, if you make it it will be Oh Em Ghee. Costco also sells jars with Kirkland organic Ghee...

We pretty much just use salted butter just for eating on warm bread so it definitely has a purpose there as it is delish. We're with you on the cooking though as we use unsalted butter for most everything else (though it is also nice to use when cooking eggs at low temp - no need for any additional salt).

I didn't realize it was salted butter deal. My intention was about asking how good is "unsalted" Grass fed butter.

I can't do salted because I like to bake and it screws up my recipes.
