I've never played these games. Is this a decent place to start?

Yes, this is one of the best entry points. Honestly just about any game aside from Ys I & II is a good starting point as the games are generally not in chronological order and the story is relatively sparse. Aside from the silent protagonist Adol in the numbered games, very few characters appear in multiple games. Origins is set 700 years prior to I & II, so even less of a concern. Mainly you get introduced to characters that are name dropped in I & II. I & II also use the somewhat polarizing "bump combat" system, so I would only suggest putting the time into playing them if you get invested in the series.
