Slickdeals works best when great deals are easy to find and the community's votes and comments help bring the best ones to the Frontpage.

Lately we've seen more and more threads for the same item, from the same store, at effectively the same price - sometimes with a different coupon code, sometimes a different size or color, sometimes just a different seller on the same product page. This clutters the feed and spreads discussion, votes, and deal verification across multiple threads instead of keeping them together.

Starting today we're implementing a few changes to make our policy clearer and improve the overall deal discovery experience.

What's changing?
  • Repost Window - A new deal may be merged with an existing deal if the earlier deal was posted or received a reply (by someone other than the original deal poster) within the past 7 days.
  • Slight Price Differences - A new deal may be considered a repost if its final price is approximately the same as an existing deal within the repost window.
  • Different Coupons, About the Same Price - Deals that differ only by the coupon or promotional code used may be merged if their final prices are approximately the same.
  • Different Variants of the Same Item - Deals that otherwise qualify as reposts will be merged if they differ only in color, apparel size, packaging, flavor, or similar variations.
  • Targeted and Subscription Discounts - Deals that otherwise qualify as reposts will be merged if the lower price results only from a coupon or discount targeted at select users, or from choosing a subscription-based purchase instead of a one-time purchase.
  • Same Marketplace, Different Seller - Deals for the same item from different sellers on the same marketplace may be merged, but differences in price, shipping costs, fulfillment, item condition, or warranty may allow for separate posts.
  • Multi-Item Deals - New deals for items included in an existing deal containing more than five unique items will not be merged into that deal.

What's not changing?
  • Deals from Different Retailers - Deals for the same item from different retailers or marketplaces can still be posted separately, even if their prices are approximately the same.
  • Expired Deals - When an offer becomes available again, a new deal will not be merged with an earlier deal that was marked as expired.

What does "approximately the same" mean for prices?

Use the table below to determine whether the price difference between a new deal and an existing deal falls within the range considered approximately the same price.

Existing Deal's Final Price Difference of No More Than
$10 or less 25¢
$10.01 - $50 $1
$50.01 - $100 $2
$100.01 - $250 $5
$250.01 - $500 $10
Over $500 $20

What is meant by "unique items" for Multi-Item Deals?

These are a few examples of what we would and wouldn't consider unique items:
  • Separately listed colors of the same phone case: NOT Unique
  • Different lengths for a USB cable: UNIQUE
  • Individually linked sizes for the same shirt: NOT Unique
  • Equivalent men's and women's version of the same tennis shoe: UNIQUE

We welcome your feedback and will continue evaluating how these changes work in practice, making adjustments as needed. As always, if you believe a deal was merged incorrectly, flag it and a moderator will take a look.

If you aren't able to read the chart above, here's an image of it:

Hello SD Official,

Firstl, some of these adjustments are good ones. Makes perfect sense that the post date AND the last comment date are 7 days for consistency where reposts go. It's also much easier to not make errors, which I confess I have made where the last comment was 5 days ago, but the OP post was 6 days ago, thus not expired on the 7 day rule but only focused on the 5 day comment rule..

And happy to see threads which list multiple deals (5+) in one thread but with a very general title, allowed to have a unique deal shared as a stand alone.

However, I'm not so sure on this guideline: Targeted and Subscription Discounts - Deals that otherwise qualify as reposts will be merged if the lower price results only from a coupon or discount targeted at select users, or from choosing a subscription-based purchase instead of a one-time purchase.

This is pretty broad, and I'm afraid the way I'm interpreting it, if correct, may not be helpful at times to the community in the quest to save money.

If I'm understanding this correctly, let's say someone posts up a deal for Cat Litter at $25.99 (non S&S price which may be 15% off a regular price of $32).

Someone else locates a coupon and posts a deal for 30% off your first subscription S&S order which makes the price $14.99 (S&S + the coupon %)

Granted, it's not always possible to know which coupons are targeted vs avail. to everyone (some Amazon Q's may be only for Prime accounts or targeted to users). So is the $14 deal going to be merged into the $25.99 deal?

If so, I have to express my concern with this. without the $14 price in the title, no one is going to circle back to the $26 priced thread 4 days later ($26 posted on 11/6, $14 posted on 11/10) when the $14 price is buried in the comments when merged. I am all for limiting board clutter (ie, posting a seperate thread for every color of a jacket, or every flavor of salad dressing) but I am also very concerned that users are going to miss significantly lower priced opportunities by merging targeted newly issued coupons with significant price savings into a thread as outlined with a much higher price.

Major price differences of more than say 10%, even if the new available price is targeted, as benchmark shouldn't be merged, similar to the chart issued for 'close in price" criteria that was issued. I understand a difference of .89 cents cheaper on a $17 item with S&S, but my cat littler example is very real world and happens often on SD.

Thanks for your consideration of my input and for improving the overall flow of the boards to avoid clutter.
