I recommend replacing the MicroSD card with a branded model (Samsung, Sandisk, Lexar, PNY, Onn, etc) and flash Knulli or MuOS on it. Then copy whatever games you want from the Anbernic card over to the new card, along with any you've dumped from original media or downloaded.
Knulli works very well on these. Just make note, Anbernic recently started making these with DDR3 memory rather than DDR4, so there are two versions of the firmware. This throws off a lot of people, as the wrong one for the hardware just displays a black screen at boot.
This is a nice handheld overall for starting with emulation. The sticks are some of my favorite in the under $50 range, so they allow playable PS1, Dreamcast, arcade and N64. N64's library is mostly playable, but the H700 CPU isn't capable of rendering the more graphically intensive games on N64 and Dreamcast at full speed. (Goldeneye, Banjo-Tooie, Shenmue/Shenmue 2)

At a glance this seems significantly more powerful and you get the analog sticks. Do people just prefer OnionOS that much more?

The RG35xxPro is an across the board upgrade. The H700 chip in the RG35xxPro is 30-60% faster in synthetic benchmarks than the RK3326 in the G350, which translates to mostly playable N64 with the Rg35, vs mostly unplayable on the G350. Heck, there is even a Halo port that works shockingly well in PortMaster if you use KnulliOS. (Free, just flash a MicroSD card with it) The H700 chipset is widely supported with custom firmwares from Knulli, MuOS, Rocknix and more.
The RG35xxPro also comes with built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, while the G350 does not.
Get the RG35xxPro if you want a 3.5" vertical handheld under $50. If you want a bigger screen, the RG40xxV and RG40xxH have slightly larger 4" screens with the same chipset and specs, but larger screen and overall size.

For closer to $60, the Miniloong Pocket 1 is a nice Linux handheld that is good up to N64. It is however much less capable than most of the handhelds below.
Over $75, you start seeing Android handhelds appear, and the $75-$100 range has lots of options. In this range are the Mangmi Air X, RG406H, and RG Vita. I personally recommend the Mangmi Air X as the Snapdragon Chipset in it is better supported than all the others Mali GPUs.
In the $90-$110 range, you generslly see a further jump in performance. There, you get the RG Slide, RG406V and the RG55G1. The RG55G1 actually has a capable Snapdragon CPU. The 8GB model of that handheld is sometimes down to around $110-$120, making it fairly good midrange handheld.
The Retroid Pocket 5 recently has been often available under $150, (I have one on the way for $129 shipped) and it's a big jump in performance, able to play basically all PS2, GC and Xbox. (Exceptions with certain problem games) That one can even do some low-end PC emulation, and respectable Switch emulation.
