This OmniDesk is a compact Ryzen 7 8700G desktop that looks strongest for office work, media, light gaming, and general everyday use. The 8700G and its integrated graphics are described as capable of low end Minecraft, many DX12 games, and even 2K 60 fps in some titles, with the 65 watt power supply giving it a bit more headroom than similar mini PCs. The main limits are 16GB of memory, which is thin for local AI, and a case and power setup that may be awkward to upgrade. Open box wear on the SSD also showed up in one unit, so it suits buyers who want a small, capable machine more than a highly expandable one.

  • Office workers and media streamers who want a compact desktop, because it handles everyday work, movies, and light gaming well.

  • PC gamers playing modern DirectX 12 titles, because the 8700G can run them well and target 2K 60fps.

  • Tinkerers planning a low-power graphics upgrade, because the system can take a modest GPU like a 3050 or similar card.

  • Recording setups using USB microphones, because digital audio bypasses the computer's sound card.

  • Local AI builders running larger models, because 16GB system memory is too little without much more RAM and a GPU.

  • Upgraders who need easy power-supply swaps, because the motherboard uses proprietary connections and replacement can be challenging.

  • Users expecting lots of expansion room, because the chassis appears to have no expansion ports and only limited room for extra memory or storage.

  • Heavy sustained gaming in a cramped case, because the stock heatsink can hit thermal throttling around 95°C.

For pure performance, when it comes to running some AI models, would I be better off going with something like this or better off going with one of those mini PCs?

IF the miniPC has more LPDDR5 unified memory then the Mini PC. This machine would be dogshit for local AI, this is a work station for people that do office work or watch movies and do light gaming. Local AI needs RAM. 16GB is enough to run tools and instructions and very small models to do small tasks for you like OCR PDFs, dump spreadsheets, organize documents and that kind of thing but under the supervision of yourself and a larger model through API access. IF you put a card with 20-32GB VRAM then you would have a different story but you still would need more system RAM. If you just want the best possible local ai for the lowest possible price look at mac minis with 24, 32, 48 GB memory. They would probably still be a bit slow but you would get better performance.

Picked up one of these 2 weeks ago, only one existed I could see in stock so I didn't pass it on here.
HP - OmniDesk Desktop - AMD Ryzen 7 8700G 2024 - 16GB DDR5 Memory - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 - 1TB SSD - Gray Wood
$352.99

It's a great little machine for the price and guts inside. although I swapped the single 16gb to dual 8gb I had laying around to feed the cpu/igpu better.
The 3050 will be rehoused elsewhere and this 8700g will be fine for low-end Minecraft and stuff like that.

8700g can run pretty much any dx12 game well or 2k60fps most eye candy.
my worry would be hitting the 95c thermal throttle with this case heatsink.
if i had an 8700g i would rather get a big cube heatsink with push pull fans.

You need a GPU for running local AI. If you want to use system RAM, get a Mac. I have tried running AI models off my 64GB ram system and to my standards it is dog crap slow.

just saying LPDDR5 does not mean it is faster than SODIMM DDR5. It is dependent on the clock speeds of ram.

for the price... I think this is one of the best options around.
The AMD Ryzen 7 8700G features an NPU (Neural Processing Unit) rated at 16 TOPS
(Trillion Operations Per Second) of dedicated AI performance.

I have the next CPU up in a laptop. I would say it is the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 and it can do 50 TOPS. But memory means alot.

This system should play all AAA games. Saying it is fine for Minecraft makes it sound like it can not run aaa games which it can.

Right now, this is THE BEST MINI PC deal around... even though it is technically a desktop. It runs on a 65 Watt PSU vs 45 Watts for most laptop PC's with the same architecture and GPU (780m). The main difference is that this CPU can handle more electricity, so you get a bit more power.

Which one is the one with the RTX 3050? Got a link?
