Farking Furnace Quit Now I'm Freezing! (install completed)

70,084 5,351 February 24, 2006 at 06:22 AM
OK, now I'm going to start a rant thread...hey I deserve one every once in a while Stick Out Tongue
My furnace has been sounding "strained" lately so I set up an appointment for someone to come out today to do a service check on it. Well, I guess I didn't schedule it too soon since it started making a rattling noise yesterday and quit during the night. I woke up to a cold house and there was a burning smell. My throat is sore and my glands are swollen grrrrrrrrr. I'm just hoping that they can fix it today since it's Friday I don't want to have to wait all weekend for a part or a new furnace! Here's my weather forecast for the next few days:
Friday[Chance of Snow]36 | 27
Saturday[Snow Showers]33 | 15
Sunday [Chance of Snow]26 | 14
Monday[Chance of Snow]24 | 8
Tuesday[Partly Cloudy]28 | 16

Do any of you ever have a run of bad karma with electrical/mechanical things? Both of my computers have been glitchy lately, my furnace is down, my copier quit working, even my stupid toaster is going. I think I might just run away and be a beach bum in Hawaii. nod

PM BikerEric, he may have some insight or be able to evaluate what the repairperson says.

It could be something relatively simple, like the thermocouple. Hopefully it's not the heat exchanger (but check your warranty, some furnaces have lifetime warranties on them) or the blower motor. They should have parts.

Borrow or buy some electric heaters and plug them in. You don't want the house water pipes to freeze. We had our furnace replaced back in November. It was a moderately cold day, and we kept comfortable with just a couple of those oil-heaters while the installers worked. We had a lot of work done (adding ducting, new water heater, etc.) so it took almost all day.

Furnace went out night before and i had 5 blankets on me, and i probably got overheated to cause my temperature to rise to 101.4*

Periodically run some hot water through all your sinks/tubs/showers. Find some good thick sleeping bags if the repair man says it's going to be a few days for the part to come in. Sorry about your furnace. Frown

Depending on the make/model, that could be about right for some sort of failure. Thermocouples do wear out - some of them last only several years, and some blowers have a 6, 8, or 10 year warranty.

Don't wait too long to start warming the house with alternate heating sources. It will take a LOT more time and energy to raise the temperature back up later than if you can start pumping heat in there asap.
