Passport fees are going up July 13

Get that expiring passport renewed quickly: Charges for U.S. passports and visas for foreigners will rise July 13, the U.S. Department of State says.

That means the cost of a passport for an adult will go from $100 to $135, including a $25 administrative fee. Those under 16 will pay $105 with the fee, up from $85 now.

Passport cards, which can be used by Americans traveling by land or sea on trips to the non-U.S. parts of the Caribbean, Canada and Mexico will cost more, too. The new scale is $55 for an adult, up from $45; $40 for a minor, up from $35.

A complete list of the new fees can be viewed here [state.gov].

A State Department news release says the higher fees stem from a study of how much it costs the Bureau of Consular Affairs to provide services and that the new fee scale will "cover actual operating expenses for the 301 overseas consular posts, 23 domestic passport agencies and other centers that provide these consular services to U.S. and foreign citizens."

Frequent travelers will also be hit by a new charge of $82 to add more pages to an existing passport for visas and stamps by immigration officers.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency (CPB) has issued a "know before you go" advisory for those traveling to Canada and back this week. It's a big travel time for the two countries, with Canada Day on Thursday and Fourth of July Sunday. U.S. citizens under 16 need only a birth certificate when traveling by land or sea; adults, a passport, a passport card, enhanced driver's license or membership in a "trusted traveler" program. For more info, see the CPB website.

What if you lose or forget the required documents and try to get back into the USA? (That's always been a fear of mine.) You won't be turned away if your citizenship or legal residency can be established, says CPB spokeswoman Joanne Ferreira. You usually just wait longer while your identity is checked.

Before you go to the courthouse or post office, you can fill out all forms and all instructions here:
http://travel.state.gov/passport/..._1738.html

Just did this in FL. Post office here requires appointment, whereas courthouse does not. Check the rules for your state before you just show up on Monday

Adult Passport Fee goes up by $35
Kid Passport Fee goes up by $20

I am told Monday at USPS is going to be a madhouse as many people who were procrastinating will be there.

Fees are going up because the old fees were insufficient to cover the cost of processing passport applications.

http://www.cnn.com/2010/TRAVEL/03...index.html

Passport apps must be postmarked before July 13, not received.

It should also be noted that fees for passport books also cover the costs of certain emergency services provided to American citizens overseas. These include assistance to Americans who have been victims of crime or who have been arrested abroad, assistance provided after the death of a U.S. citizen, and visits to U.S. citizens in overseas prisons. These services also include organizing the evacuation of American citizens affected by war or natural disaster in a foreign country, such as victims of the recent earthquake in Haiti. The estimated cost of providing such services to U.S. citizens in Fiscal Year 2009 was almost 300 million dollars. http://moscow.usembassy.gov/fees.html

Saturday, why?

I'm mailing out two items today alone. I'll probably mail out a couple more items on Thursday, too.

i don't understand how paying the regular price for something is considered a deal, or how it is considered $35 off for a price that doesn't exist yet.

Bah humbug, just don't leave the country in the first place. There is plenty of stuff that I haven't done here, and at least in most places here they don't hate Americans.

Got my passpot back that I sent in 7/7. Thanks, OP. The pages were attached at the middle of the book by a transparent tape. They were not stitched. The tape took a litle bit less then half of two pages minus they made annotations that took another 2 pages, minus the seal is embossed so that another 2 pages have gone, but one of these was the very last page with sensitive electronics message, so one could not count that. Therefore, only 19 extra pages would have costed $82 plus postage to send in it, or around $4.50 per page.
On the bright side, they send me an email with the return shipment tracking number as soon as they printed the postage label.

my sister's passport came back... this is the one we waited in line for Ermm

my mom's that i mailed in on the friday before the 13th is still not here, kind of hoping the pictures were okay because my sister's were denied... she took it at CVS, the associate did the picture wrong and those were denied and she had to retake at the post office. my mom's pictures were faceforward but might be too zoomed in Facepalm

you'd hope they trained their associates on how to take passport photos since they offer the service Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)
