Lucky.

Though I guess we got a decent amount last week.

Anyone use a cooling fan on their laptop? Mine is overheating and the one I bought from Target does noooothing. Any recommendations? The heat is shutting my laptop down and that can't be good.

Blow out the vents with compressed air, also make sure the internal fan is running--those die sometimes & can cause overheating. Where does the laptop sit when you use it? If you typically sit it on top of a soft surface (like your lap or a pillow) that can be problematic, even with a cooling fan underneath. A flat hard surface is best.

Thanks, VQ!

I blew out the vents, but am unsure how to check the internal fan. Aside from the battery covers, there's nothing for me to remove. (I've had my share of laptops and this one confuses me.) Its a Toshiba Satellite.

I sit it on a Belkin CushTop thingamajig. It's hard and meant for laptops.

I typically have problems during the Summer, but it's getting bad now that it's shutting down.

Can you hear the fan running? Can you feel hot air blowing out from the vents when the laptop gets hot? If it's shutting down due to heat I'll bet the internal fan isn't running.

edit: download speedfan [almico.com] if you want to get a good read on your CPU temp. I haven't used the app in a while but IIRC it lets you control your internal fan, too, and maybe even hdd speed? If nothing else it'll give you an idea of how hot the laptop's running. "Normal" temps are going to vary depending on the make, model & processor, but in general under 80 degrees C is acceptable (but that's pretty damn hot if you ask me!). Again, depending on your processor that figure may vary.

I can hear the fan running, but it's almost as if it has two modes and the high mode only kicks in right before it dies or not at all. So, if it only has one speed, it's not running correctly.

Thanks for the link. I'm downloading now. hug

Ohhhh... it's running very hot (104 EEK!) and it's not recognizing any fans. When I hit configure, fans, it lists nothing. laugh out loud

Googling shows that quite a few people have problems with Speedfan recognizing their fans so at least I feel better about that.

People also have problems altering the fan speed on certain Tohibas so I guess I'll just stick with a good cooling pad until I can get a new laptop.

Yeah I remember having some problems with that too--although I mainly used it to monitor temp, not to run fans. You can try Everest [softpedia.com] but it's a resource hog & kind of annoying how it wants to run all the time.

How soon until you get a new laptop? Overheating is not something you can typically ignore until it goes away... laugh out loud
