FORCED TIPPING - Do you get annoyed or mad if forced to tip a certain amount? NO OT.

3,704 4,318 June 23, 2011 at 09:56 AM in Question
This question may have been asked previously, but if so, too bad, LMAO as I want to know what people think now about forced tipping. NO OT, please.

My GF and I both went to a small salon in the mall ( nothing fancy and not very upscale, just standard for a mall shop ) yesterday to get our hair trimmed. I called ahead to get the price for a "cut" ( male or female ) and did specify it was to be without styling or shampooing. The person I spoke to said the price was usually $17, but they were running a special this week only for $15 for a cut. I asked if we needed to book an appointment and she said no, that they accepted walk-ins, usually with a short wait, but we could if we wanted set an appointment. We chose to just go for the walk-in as we could go to the mall and watch for a time when the salon had fewer customers waiting. ( their front window is glass and you can clearly see the inside waiting area ).

Well, we went in and our cuts went well and quickly ( and both of us were served within 15 minutes of being seated ). We were done and ready to pay at the front desk within 20 minutes or less. No shampoo or styling nor any extra service was given. The girl just dampened my hair ( and I think K.C.'s hair was dampened by her hair dresser, too) with a spray bottle of water and then she cut it. We both have very curly ringlet sort of hair and we both just had it trimmed a couple inches, no special cut or style, just telling the girls to follow the same lines as it was cut previously. Mine is a blunt cut, hers is a little layered.

However, when we got to the desk to pay, I took out my wallet and $40 cash ( $15 for each cut and a $5 tip on each ) and the girl shook her head at me and said the two cuts came to $50!!!!

I told her I was told the price was usually $17, but a special was running for $15 each cut ( and there was a sign to that effect on the wall ) and she said "Right!" and just stared at me. So, I said "That would come to $30 for the two without the tip. If I tip $5 for each haircut, which would be more than a 30% tip, and fairly generous, then that would bring the price for two up to $40 total. She replied nastily "Sir, the tip is added in before you pay and we calculate it as $8 on a $17 cut and $10 on the special $15 cut!!" I pointed out to her that her calculation would be around a 60% tip, which was ridiculous. She just stood there and stared, so I just stared back. It became a long staring contest. Finally, my girlfriend took the $40 out of my hand ( what I was planning on paying ) and laid it on the counter and said, "Jon, now you've paid the correct price for the two haircuts and added a generous tip for each, now let's go. She can't force you to pay a gratuity that's unreasonable!!"

The girl at the desk turned to the phone and picked it up and looking at me, said "I can have mall security hold you until a police officer can come out, but you really don't want me to resort to that, do you??"

Finally, I just got annoyed and gave her the extra $10 and left, but I've been mad at myself ever since, feeling I let her walk all over me ( us ) and that I should have just refused to pay or raised a big stinkeroonie.

Was I being unreasonable or was she, and how do you feel about "forced tipping" ( tips being added in prior to calculating your total bill )??

Are you confusing OP with slutsky who routinely makes stories up and posts them in lounge out of boredom.

I honestly believe OP lets people walk all over him and doesnt question anything people tell him in real life.
I think the tip story is okay. I believe it because there are a lot of shady businesses out there. And, the details sound plausible.

However, the parking lot story sounds like BS to me. It's the OP's private property and ppl just go there and park. He stated that the cops won't do anything about it AND the tow companies won't tow the cars since it's private property. He went on to say that there are no signs on the lot too. So, by that theory, if there's an empty piece of land, it's a free for all to park there and the property owner can't do anything about ppl parking on his/her land without authorization? And, the OP suggests that the tow truck companies didn't want to tow those cars and make money? That's unheard of!!!!!!

Also, the pavement removal issue now, that makes very little sense too. Because, how will that stop ppl (if this is true) from parking in that lot? Ppl park in unpaved lots all the time!

that I had signs made that said it was private property and not public parking, etc. They ignored the signs ..........:

My bad....I thought I read somewhere here that you stated the tow truck companies didn't want to tow because there's no sign forbidding ppl to park on that lot.

Either way, are you sure that you called all the tow truck companies in your area? This makes absolutely no sense to me. Because, according to your story, law enforcement and the tow truck companies don't care if ppl park on private property. If it's true, what kind of f@cking hicktown do you live in?!?!?!

By the way, if you can make a retort to my statements, why the hell can't you stand up for yourself when ppl are walking all over you?!?!!

Not really. Chandler (AZ) police wouldn't help my family out when they needed to file a report for identity theft with proof. They just started sympathizing with the "poor immigrants" and how they're probably "pumping up your Social Security". Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)

But, it was something. Whereas, when the lady in the hair salon said there was a mandatory tip for the special price hair cut, you eagerly bent over and let her give it to you! What kind of SDer are you?!?!?!

Just gonna throw it out there...do you know how percentages work? Better yet...do you know how money works? $15 (cut) <> $10 (tip)

Ok math police. It's a figure of speech. I obviously know 10<15
He obviously paid as much as the hair cut. Let me re-phrase it.
"Damn, you almost paid as much as your hair cut."

Does that satisfy you more professor Curtieson? X does not equal Y

Just gonna throw it back to you... you are not the only one that know how %%%% work! Better yet... percentage would be rounded to 67%

What are those strips with the spikes that police use to puncture tires? I'd nail a couple of those strips down in front of the parking lot.

Tipping is really a scam that has become a mind set for people. Tipping is basically subsidizing the employer for the salary that really should be paid by the employer.

Just thought I would post that the woman who owned the Beauty Salon had lunch with me yesterday and apologized profusely. She gave me a check for refund of the $50 my GF and I paid for our haircuts ( forced tip included ) and two GC Vouchers for $20 each, no minimum, to be used for any future service or another hair cut at her salon. She was really nice and said the girl was not authorized ( and no one else ever had been, either ) to add on a tip of any kind to the charge for services, and the tip, if any, was left for the customer to calculate and decide on, and 100% of it went to the operator who preformed the services. She insisted on paying for my lunch and as for the bitchy girl in the shop, the owner didn't say she fired her, but just that the girl no longer worked there, which probably means the same thing. The letter I sent her was a good move.

Big Grin

The parking lot behind my house was also removed earlier this week. It took a day and a half, and they towed 4 vehicles off the lot before they could even start work. Put two of them on a roll back and the other two were towed in by wrecker trucks. The lot took longer to remove than estimated and cost me about $300 more than the original estimate, but only because I forgot my septic tank system was underneath the parking lot and the cap for it was over in the far right corner so they had to hand remove the concrete ( paving ) around it by hand so as not to damage the cap. Brought in three loads of fill dirt when they were done and another company ( stone masons ) are coming after the 4th to fill in the stone wall so the entrance to the lot from the street behind my house is closed off permanently. Thinking of fencing the rest of my property at the sides and front with really high wrought iron.

Looks much better now and was surprised at how many of my neighbors told me they had always hated the parking lot behind my house! Don't know why they never told me how they felt before this or I probably would have had it removed sooner had I known. Glad it's almost over now, though and I can decide what to put back there where the lot was. ( trees and plants, etc. )
