Need the help of the Lounge with my wireless router.

21,286 1,080 January 7, 2012 at 12:51 PM
I farking hate these farking wireless routers. They never farking work for me. I can hook them up just fine, but it seems I can never get internet access without being hard wired to them.

I need someone to walk me through this.

I posted this here instead of tech support because lots of "every day" people set these up and can probably help. Mods, PLEASE don't move this to tech support.

EDIT - BTW, it's a Netgear WNDR3300, N and G router. I've gone through the setup page, and added the passcode and that worked fine. It just isn't getting internet when wireless. Mad

Did you load DD-WRT on it, or are you using the crappy Netgear default firmware?

Are you connecting but just 'local only'?

Need more info zmarko. Sorry to ask this but - lead me from the wall to your computer. Who do you pay for your internet and what kind is it (Verizon FiOS, Cox cable, Hughes satellite...)?

Where does that connection come into your house? Did your ISP provide you with any equipment and if so, what is the make & model of that gear?

Walk me from the wall to your computer. What's plugged in between the wireless router & the wall? Anything?

We can start narrowing down the possibilities when we know what we're up against here.

I have Comcast for cable/internet. Coax from the wall to my Modem (motorola SB5100 "Surfboard", which I've had for years but didn't use all the time, as when I lived in NC TWC supplied me with a free modem), Cat5 from my modem to my router.

Okay, from the cable modem, the Cat5 should connect to the WAN port on your WNDR3300 wireless router. If it's plugged into one of the four LAN ports, you're doing it wrong. Wink

It's hooked up correctly (wires wise). I'm an idiot when it comes to software.

AND if the modem & router are both trying to handle DHCP they could be tripping each other up. In most cases either the router needs to be set to act as an access point only, or the modem needs to be set to "bridge" mode, which takes a bit more work than just plugging in a cat5 cable.

I'll search in a second but if you got into the router to set the wireless key then look for an option that says "use as access point" and try that. I'll see if I can find you instructions.

Well, it's good to know you're connected properly from the outside source to your router. Any time you're trying to change router settings, you should be connected via hard-wire, because that will ALWAYS work. If you're connecting to the router wirelessly, you can really knock yourself off-line by changing the wireless settings.

I don't believe the Surfboard 5100 provides DHCP, simply a WAN IP address for the router or computer behind it.

Yeah some quick checking & it looks like the default for that model of router is going to be for it to handle DHCP. Your modem is probably also trying to do this. The easiest way to fix this is going to be to turn off DHCP on the router. You can either try to dig out that setting or see if you can set it as an access point only, either way should do the trick.

Thanks VQ. I don't see anything that says 'use as access point'.
