USAA offers some of the best rates and perks on car rentals in my opinion. Especially for drivers who are 18 to 24, typically saves $25 to $30 per day. I have only used the Hertz discount and it's saved me a lot of money.

This might be YMMV for some as technically you are required to show proof of your USAA membership (debit card) upon getting the car. Just open a USAA Free Checking account (takes about 10 mins) and you are good to go.

Recently did a quote for a 3 month rental from the Denver Airport (going for an internship and am under 24) and they quoted me almost $3600 and with the USAA discount it dropped to $1800!

Have also gotten weekly rentals in Atlanta for about $119 to $125 a week for a full size.

If you know you are going somewhere hotwire/priceline prices are much better than even these rates. One strategy to use is to book the USAA rate that does not require upfront payment to reserve a car at that price (usually a credit card is not even needed to make the reservation). Then when you are 100% sure you will need the car make a reservation through hotwire/priceline.

i think USAA is still the best because they will waive the underage driver fee which priceline wont

I didn't think of that circumstance. I guess if you are below 25 USAA is better but for others the priceline/hotwire rate is unbeatable.

Hi all, I am going to Las Vegas in April and will be 23, traveling with a 24 year old. Did you under-25 year olds book your rental cars online or over the phone? I am trying to price out a few different places but even with the USAA codes, it still shows I may be charged the young driver surcharge. I've never rented a car before so I'm not sure if I'm doing it correctly. I just don't want to get screwed out of my discount.

Example: The Hertz site says on the final pricing page: "Estimated amount to be paid at the counter is based on available information at the time of reservation for renters age 25 and older."

Additionally, if you did book online, where did you book? The rental car site or an OTA? Thanks Smilie

agreed. I'm renting this week with my amex, and paying for their premium rental coverage, because the even with the insurance as part of the rental, theres a $5000 dollar hole for damage to the car, that you would be responsible for.

I think this is one of the reasons they offer insurance with the rental, that's a huge deductible. That I think people should realize exists, and I would think the vast majority of damage to the rental would be far less then that. Its only if something oh shit happens that the insurance will pay out
This all depends on your primary insurance coverage. In my case I choose not to own a car for various reasons but rent from Avis at times I would like to have one available to me. Recently I was in an accident where I was struck by another vehicle while I was driving a Volvo from Avis. I made the reservation using the USAA membership code that I am entitled to enjoy as a member as well as a Visa card from another credit union. The other driver was at fault but changed his story once the police were not involved and the financial responsibility was to be determined. It came down to he paid for his car's damage and I was responsible for the damage to the Volvo from Avis. If I had purchased the additional coverage from Avis it would've been handled by them. USAA won't kick in until after a $5000 deductible paid out of my pocket is reached. However Visa on the majority of their credit cards provide collision damage waivers on rental vehicles without deductibles with a generous ceiling coverage for any damage for the rental vehicle property. This benefit kicks in as secondary coverage for those who hold primary insurance already. In my case not holding primary insurance since I don't own a car to insure, the Visa coverage kicked in immediately and took care of the whole thing. Just need to notify them when there is an accident regardless of whether it looks like you'll need to engage it or not. There is a 45 day window to report to Visa which slow moving rental company processes and procedures will put things beyond that window by the time they tell you it's on you to fix the car. All Visa asks beyond the initial notification is copies of your rental paperwork and police reports if available. They handle it completely from there. It's wonderful and comes at no additional cost like the premium rental coverage sold at the rental counter. Amex I understand kicks in as primary coverage so those who are stressing about a claim raising rates need not worry in that scenario with Amex. But for me I'm more than happy having taxes, maintenance, insurance, or the majority of the costs of driving off my plate by renting rather than owning and exercising the widely unknown liability coverage included at no cost by using my Visa card. It works very well for me. Without knowing all the particulars of your situation, from a generic Amex client benefit view you might wanna reconsider the need for purchasing rental counter coverage. Amex should handle all of it regardless of USAA or not and near $30/day can get pretty costly to rest easier for something you probably don't need to worry about already. Just sayin

thanks sharing your experience.

Its important to note, that if someone does have a car and insurance, not every AMEX product comes with primary coverage. My blue doesn't, so I typically pay the 20 dollars per rental (not per day) for their premium coverage that then becomes primary.

it seems USAA has changed their policy and no longer allow non-military members

When we went to Maui, for pleasure, I rented with Hertz and requested a full-size. They upgraded me to a Lincoln Towncar, which is actually a "luxury" model for them. Well, that was nice and all, except:.
This is SOP for Maui. We have traveled there for vacation the past seven years.
Don't accept a car higher in class unless you need it. HI has some of the highest prices for gas in the USA and high-MPG cars are a premium at the car rental agencies there.
It might seem like they are doing you a favor but they're not...

True. However, we ended up doing the 'Road to Hana' drive (which was awesome), and Hertz didn't put any conditions about taking the 'south road' back. According to the tour CD, most rental car companies have explicit clauses that you can't take that road due to the nature of it. Since ours didn't, and they didn't let me switch out for the Wrangler, we took the town car Smilie. It too was an awesome drive, but I did feel bad for the people on the cliff side trying to pass us by going the opposite direction.
