I've noticed that people often have questions about price/coupon matching, or have trouble executing price matches. I'm hoping to provide all the resources you need for successful price matches. Some of these policies are hard to find so I hope this list is helpful to noobs and veterans alike.

My first rule of price matching is to bring a printout of the store's PM policy with you. Before you, go have the relevant sections highlighted, this includes anything having to do with rebates, coupons, etc. This puts them on notice that you are serious and have done your homework. Nothing beats the feeling of having a manager contradict the PM policy, then pulling the PM policy out of your pocket and pointing to a section (already highlighted) that negates what he said. When that happens, you'll get your PM 100% of the time, and the manager will feel like a tool. Hopefully there will be lots of other customers nearby when this happens

These are the price matching policies of the most popular SD retailers, in alphabetical order. If you can think of any that I missed please add them to the wiki.

One thing to note is that some of the retailers above do not PM other stores but it's still helpful to know what their PM policy is. For instance, Amazon will give you a price adjustment within 30 days if they lower their price. I've been told at least twice that they cannot adjust the price once the product has been shipped. Then I respond with the blurb about price adjustments, along with a direct link to that section, and viola, I've got my price adjustment and an apology. (Amazon no longer offers price protection.)

keep in mind the "spirit" of the policy... meaning the store has the price matching policy so the consumer can feel safe and secure (in regards to price/value issues) so the shopper can shop with confidence at their store

once in a while a manager may need to be reminded... LOL

So, if I purchase an item at BB through a PM, am I still eligible for another PM if the price drops at another store? Furthermore, am I eligible for yet another PM at BB on their promotion? All within 30 days.
I don't think it falls under PM'ing a PM, right?

Just an FYI with OfficeMax. I've noticed items on their website on sale or clearance. Just print out what you see and you can go into your loc OfficeMax and they will adjust the price accordnig to what you printed out. According to them their warehouse sometimes adjusts prices on their website an the local stores do not know about it. But they will honor the price as long as you bring proof. I purchased a fax machine and a laptop using this method.

TRU: They do not price match, they refuse to be competitive, your best bet is to shop someone who is competitive, and will price match, especially if they allow you X days after the fact to get a price match. IMHO

"This policy is subject to change without notice."
-ah, the get out of jail free card-

Two incidences I remember vividly:
1. Office Max telling me that Kmart was not a competitor
2. Best Buy store manager telling me that BestBuy.com was a different company and they would not price match to them because they were an "online retailer" (umm, ya think)

Sad that the customer is no longer "always right"...

I don't think it falls under PM'ing a PM, right?

You probably are not eligible. If it is a significant amount, return the item and repurchase it at the lower price.

You should have politely asked that manager for the corporate number of Best Buy and asked him to sit in with you while you called them and asked them if that was true and if the stores are supposed to honor the online prices. He knew he was blowing smoke.

(A piece of advice for people dealing with managers--try to get them away from other employees when you deal with them. If they have dug their heels in against you, an audience makes them much more unlikely to change their position. No audience will help them keep their pride and get you the deal.)

Best Buy got into trouble not too long ago for having 2 "websites." One available to the public and one through the stores. The prices were different. They were supposed to remedy that situation. I'm hoping that your event happened "pre" them getting busted and that they have remedied the situation.

A rep for OP, thumbs up for "the deal," and a rep for firebug. Thanks, everybody!

For Frys - I could not find their PM policy , but I know their stores don't PM their website price except the San Francisco Bay area stores.

Thank you for putting this all in one place--we have been talking about this week and were unsure of who did pricematch.

Walmart--not sure what the policy states, but they have price-matched for us before...actually it was on black friday. They just wanted to see a copy of the ad they were matching.

Have fun shopping everyone!

There are always exceptions to these policies. Sometimes in favor of the consumer, but usually in favor of the store. A recent example is is the Toys R Us free $25 gift card on purchase of Mario Galaxy (Wii).. While the PM policy for Bestbuy clearly states "The Best Buy Price Guarantee does not apply to our or our competitors' free offers, ..." , Bestbuy went as far as adding a system-level code for Bestbuy PM TRU's Mario Galaxy Offer. Even after this, some people were denied this offer at BB stores across the US.

So, even though the policies are in place, there are places where they are not followed exactly, so all these links are YMMV Smilie.. Still a good post to have when comparing PM policies.

I agree with taking managers to the side to man-handle them.

While you may have the policy in hand- it is handy to know (from experience) which stores stand BEHIND management decisions and which do not.

If you were arguing at certain stores- even if it's against posted policy, managers can do whatever they want. In really good ones- that's not the case. OD is one of those certain stores- ugh! Don't upset anyone.

Best rule of thumb, is NOT to have a chip on your shoulder when you do it or start. Stay polite and courteous at all times. Chips tend to throw up road blocks pretty quickly!
