I don't want any monopoly having a kill switch to the power on my house when they start measuring what I'm doing to consume power. The amount that I use should suffice.

I don't think they can as long as they can still read the meter.
Oh, I wouldn't be surprised if there's something in the terms of use that exclude you from hindering their access to the meter.
Quote from NickFury :
is your meter inside the house?
Nope.
Quote from VorlonFrog :
They generally like the homeowner to be present, just in case they blow up his home while changing out the meter. nod
That and the guy relit my appliances for me.

And my water heater has started leaking some time recently Annoyed

You're telling me! I do believe I'm just going to pay someone to do all the work, though. But I've had this same one the entire ten years I've lived in the house, so I can't complain too much.

So are you getting a new water heater or are you just getting that one fixed?

AFAIK, if it's leaking, your only option is to replace it.

Ok, I wasn't sure if you could weld the leak shut or something.

It could also justify upgrading from a 30 to a 40 gallon unit.

My water heater is a minimum of 14 years old. I thought about replacing it, but since I'm selling the house in the next couple of months, I'm just going to leave it. I'm hoping it doesn't start leaking before then.

Really? Why not?

A lot of utility companies (at least used to) offer rebates and credits for getting one, so it might be a better deal.
