To vegetarians: If beef could be produced like milk without hurting the cow, would you eat it?

16,042 3,026 January 28, 2016 at 12:14 AM
Many vegetarians don't eat meat "because it has a face". Say meat could be produced without hurting the cow, much like how milk is. The cow goes on living and doesn't even notice it's been harvested. Would you eat it?

This isn't a theoretical exercise but something we are on the brink of being able to do.

Cultured beef is not GMO. What about cultured beef makes you think it's GMO?

you're growing meat from meat. while you might not label it GMO, in vitro meat is the same damn thing.

genetically modified organism. how is taking tissue from cow #293489 and growing his meat in a petri dish to a larger size not genetic modifying organisms?

Well, let's start with the "genetically modified" part and work from there. At which point during this process do they modify the genes?

LMAO. It's not the "same damn thing" at all. A cow grows meat from meat. Is that GMO? GMO corn grows right in the ground, not in vitro, so does that make it Organic? There's nothing GMO about cultured beef at all. I don't think you know what GMO means.

A baby is taking a small amount of tissue and growing it to a larger size. Does that make babies GMO?

This is a wild guess, as I haven't read up on the subject but wouldn't they have to modify the genes so the 'meat' would continue to grow in the lab? Dontknow

I wonder what it would taste like? The taste of meat from animals varies a lot depending on diet and how they lived and even how they died. With the environmental factors eliminated I wonder if it would taste better or worse?
