Amex charges $25 for their 'premium' rental insurance every time you rent a car. And the insurance doesn't include Liability Coverage (just vehicle damage)....poor product in my opinion. My regular car insurance covers 'rentals" with Liability.

Although a 7 year old card does factor in your fico score, I really am not sure how much it would make a difference with your mortgage application process. Don't sweat it too much.

File a claim with AMEX, and that's the end of it. No deductible, no jacked up rates for the next couple of years.
File a claim with your insurer, and you're going to be paying out a couple of hundo in deductibles + who knows by how much they'll jack up your premium. The average premium increase after filing a claim is 30%, for several years.
