Firearm owners -- Do you have insurance? (No OT)

2,401 1,703 April 4, 2016 at 03:21 PM
For those of you that carry concealed or have home defense weapons, do you keep a attorney on stand by in case you have to use your firearm in a self defense situation?

Do you use one of the prepaid/insurance services such as the ACLDN/CCW Safe/Texas Law Shield/US Law Shield/etc..?

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with these companies and if some are better than others?

I've researched them, but so far haven't purchased any. For now, I'll rely on my homeowner's insurance if it were ever needed. NC is pretty supportive of gun rights, especially in self defense situations, though they have higher standards for a concealed carry permit than many states. On the recommendation of the instructor with whom I took the class, I keep the target used to show I'm proficient with a firearm.

No specific CCW insurance, but I do know/have an attorney to call if needed and I have an umbrella policy.

Alabama has a history of being kind to firearms owners when used in self defense situations, as most prosecutors here do not pursue charges against civilians in defensive situations.

No insurance other than homeowner's. SC is also a very gun friendly state. Recently a grand jury failed to indict a CCW holder that shot a teen stealing from his vehicle late at night.

No insurance. Why do I need insurance to cover my 2nd Amendment rights and my state is gun friendly for citizens who use it lawfully? I open carry as a general deterrent.

I'm in a pretty Pro-2A state as well that has the Stand Your Ground law. The big thing for me is paying ~$11/mo for some peace of mind wouldn't be that big of a deal.

However, I've only recently started looking into it and not sure if there are downsides to it or if people had experiences with companies (whether or not they've actually needed their services).

So ~$150 / yr to have a number to call who will provide a lawyer and advice to you as well as put up money for your bail/defense.

I still don't see the point when so many people who use guns defensively aren't arrest or charged with anything

But some are arrested or charged...and as the previous poster said, it may be worth it for some for the peace of mind. There are certain states where I would absolutely have some sort of additional coverage for this sort of event.

I was falsely accused of a weapons violation (making a threat while aiming a firearm) in 2002 while being an LEO. It lead to an arrest and while no charges were filed (DA called bullshit on the accuser who was another LEO who is currently in jail for an unrelated incident), knowing that I could make any amount of bail under 1 million if needed was worth the monthly amount I pay.

Because while you might be right, you could be the guy accused and making a million dollar bail is not fun. Now if you are confident you can make the bail by all means do not waste your money.

Yep, as others have said just because you might have been right in the situation where you had to use your firearm that you won't get an overzealous DA that has a thing against guns.

It is highly location dependent as some states if you are found not guilty of criminal charges you cannot be sued in civil court by family members but in the small case that it can happen lawyer fees can add up to quite a bit in which case ~150/yr seems to be a bargain.

However, like I said I have no idea and I would hope I would never have to use my firearm but in the case that I did it would be nice to have that peace of mind that someone experienced will be there to help me if I need it.

So which company do you use?

I'm not sure, I haven't signed up for one yet...the ones I have found that have been fairly popular are the following:

CCW Safe - https://ccwsafe.com/

Popular but it is claimed they haven't actually had any court time yet for their members.

Second Call Defense - http://www.secondcalldefense.org/

This one is also one of the pricier ones but it also offers insurance on your weapon from what it looks like.

Armed Citiziens Legal Defense Network (ACLDN) - http://www.armedcitizensnetwork.org/

Popular as well.

Texas Law Shield / US Law Shield

Popular but not available in all states

USCCA
https://www.usconcealedcarry.com/

Popular as well

NRA Insurance
There is also the NRA insurance which is through a company called Lockton Affinity, LLC.

There are quite a bit of choices and most of them seem good but was looking if someone actually had a membership with these (or any others).
