Costco is currently clearing out their stock of 40 year old single malt scotch whisky at $199.97. It was for $399.99. It seems the price is valid at all stores (at least in Illinois). Also, it's not on sale in all states, as one of the members pointed out, it's not on sale in Delaware. I would strongly suggest to call ahead and ask for Item # 746526 for inventory and also the price. Originally was selling for $699.99.

Also, please do not compare this with blue label or any other blended scotch whisky, this is single malt, which tends to be little expensive and smoother (at least for me). I have always loved Costco brand Kirkland's single malt offerings and I am pretty sure won't be disappointed with this. Also, the price might say $399.99, but ring up as $199.97 as price change might have happened recently.

If they are ethylene based than you better stock up on Conc sulfuric acid so you dehydrate the ethanol into ethylene.... That being said... You never know, better safe than sorry. I for one welcome our new ethylene based overlords.

"The notion that Costco is "clearing out" something that they've been waiting 40 years to sell is amusing."
I found very funny..

Coming back to the topic.. so its a 40y old.. how can we know for sure? With so many scams out there, its so easy for someone in the value chain to lie and add a few years and sell for more..

The only way Costco would have verified is by having one of their inhouse tasters.. taste it and certify.. That is not enough for me to shell out 4 times what I normally pay for a bottle. Lagavulin 16 at $55.. better value in my opinion.

The reason they are "clearing them out" ?.. no one buying at that ridiculous price thats why.

Has anyone tried this? opinions? I might still pick up a bottle at $199.
Interested in knowing where you get your Lagavulin for $55. The lowest I have seen is $100 around here in the Atlanta area.

Either could be correct.

It has passed your bed time.

It is past your bed time.

I could be wrong, but I believe it's "bedtime", not "bed time". I could also be wrong about this, but "passed" is a verb (past participle, I think) and "past" is a noun or adjective. If you are going to say "passed", then what is the "it" that is doing the passing?

I like Scotch as much as the next guy, and half off always sounds appealing. But is this stuff really $175 better than a $25 bottle of Chivas Regal?
you don't like scotch as much as the next guy

I used to get it wholesale for about $58, but that was TABC (Texas) and not for off-site consumption. Retail in Houston is anywhere from $65 on the super low end to $100 or so on the high end. You can generally find it for about $75-80 regularly.

FYI all SoCal folks - I just called to find availability at the three stores closest to me (Los Feliz, Burbank, Alhambra) and was told they're all out. The Costco guy then said that the system showed it out of stock at all stores in SoCal. Tempted to show up and try anyway, but doesn't sound promising.

Evidently not.

Maybe I've been too broke for too long. Or maybe I just don't have very refined tastes. But I just don't know how you can rationalize that big of a price differential between normal liquor store scotch and this stuff unless it's an absolutely life-changing experience. And even then, how you end up with the discretionary income for that to even be a serious consideration.

Seems like a whole lot of money for something you will just pee out anyway.
And then that will in some cases be peed out later by somebody else. So in those special cases this is on average $100 a bottle and even a better deal.

$299.99 at San Jose Costco and all surrounding locations. It's marked $399.99, but there is a $100 instant coupon. Had to pass, would have bit at $199.97.

For those in the South Bay Area, here is the inventory count: Almaden 5, NE San Jose 2, Fremont 15, Hayward 12, and Gilroy 2.

FWIW FYI, as of today, there is no stock in the Phoenix, Las Vegas, or Los Angeles metropolitan areas. At least according to the three different Costco locations I called (they also checked the stock in surrounding areas each time). Which really bums me out, since I totally would have jumped on this at $199. Oh well. First world problems. =D

Damn, I would love Lagavulin at that price. It is my favorite (Islay for me > Speyside and Highland), and I would happily be in for 10 at that price.

Anybody see a $55 Lagavulin in Atlanta area Costco? Please alert if you do.

Called the Alpharetta store (metro Atlanta) and the guy said he had no 40-year old anything. Saved me the trip.

Could always just settle for Laphroaig.

Or, if you're feeling adventurous try some Kilchoman. New distillery (first in Islay for like 100 years). I grabbed a 2014 release of theirs for about $28 wholesale and really enjoyed it, even with it's apparent 6 years aged. They should have a 10 year out pretty soon here, not sure of the price point.

I have this at $399. It wasn't worth it to me, but for $199 that's a steal. Personally though I'd spend the $200 on signet over this. I like the glenlivet 18 better.
