RANT: Kodak scanner (lack of) warranty

Is Kodak crazy or am I?
I wanted to buy a Kodak i2900 document scanner but their warranty is only three months. Seriously? A three month warranty on a $3,000 scanner? I called Kodak to get information on service and after four calls I was finally given a price of $700 for a one year advanced replacement "service contract."
I do not understand what Kodak is thinking at all!
My perception is:
1. If this scanner is any good, why is the warranty only three months?
Auto companies promote their quality with long warranties. What does Kodak expect me to think when they only offer a three month warranty?
2. At $700 /year, I will pay the cost of the entire scanner in four years. Is this the expected lifespan of this scanner? Economically, it seems it would make sense to replace the scanner after three years instead of paying for the service contract for the fourth year. So Kodak wants me to pay them $5,100 every three years for the privilege of using their scanner?
3. Unless you buy from an "Authorized Reseller," you get NO warranty. So, if I want to save $1,500 and buy a refurbished/open box scanner I can not even buy a service contract (at half the cost of the entire scanner for one year!).
What am I missing? Why would anyone buy a Kodak scanner when there are so many other options with much better warranties? Epson offers a THREE YEAR warranty, even on their refurbished scanners! Can someone please explain to me why Kodak thinks I will buy their products?

I would love to buy an FI-7280 but it does not work with Linux. Kodak emphasizes their Linux support which is why I was considering the i2900.
