People taking peelies (coupons) off items in the store

486 September 25, 2008 at 05:01 PM in Chat (4)
Do you think it is wrong or okay for people to take peelies (coupons) off of items in the store when they don't ever buy that item?

Looks like he got $3 manufacturer coupons for a $1-$2 item.

Some stores will pay the difference between the coupon value and the item's price to you as cash. Or store credit. They're getting that money back from the manufacturer anyway.

Edit: Looks like my post wasn't needed.

I feel like I'm in the Twilight Zone with people patting this guy on the back for something he should be ashamed of. I feel he's abusing a system that obviously intends for a customer to take one coupon, and not an entire tearpad with 50-70 coupons. I guess I was raised with different standards.

Funny story non the less. LOL.
Although I'm mostly with you, I don't think he should be ashamed of himself.

You know they expire. Why don't you donate them to some homeless shelter or something.

These days most stores wont give you any cash back if the coupon value exceeds the price of the item. Retailers and suppliers conspired to change coupon policies after the extreme coupon-using craze took off.

LOL! Archeologists 2000 years in the future are going to draw some awfully wrong conclusions once they hit your house.

"According to our findings, people living in 2013 were very accident prone..."

Well, now that I think about it, maybe their conclusions won't be THAT far off.

couple summers ago, they had a coupon for $3/2 any j&j product with no restrictions. they came in blinkie form and tearpads at grocery/drugstores (found everywhere).

i went around and farmed ziploc bags full of coupons, ordered them in walmart. since they were 97¢ + tax, it was an easy money maker: 2 x (97¢ + tax) - $3 coupon = 88¢ overage/cash back.

that doesn't seem like a lot, but say you hit one store and find two tearpads (40-50 coupons on each) that is $70+ cash back and 160-200 free kits...expand that to large metro + special order at walmart = big payouts.

the only thing that sucked was waiting for shipments since these are assembly (i.e. JIT/made-to-order) and took weeks to ship. oh, and now they have verbiage on the coupons so they can't be used on trial size or these mini kits Big Grin
Wow! No static from Wallymart cashiers? Even though you are following the terms coupon. And do they just hand you cash back?

No doubt but........

I'm normally 100% on the moral and ethical side but lemme just throw some thoughts out in random order....

How is this different than an obvious price mistake? Several years ago Amazon had a 99.99 item for 9.99. Clearly a typo. Any different?

Frankly, J & J had their legal department clear the coupon. If you get into a legal dispute with them (or anyone else on the planet) their lawyers will ALWAYS take every advantage and then some. Do you own them any "fairness" in what is essentially a legal issue?

Is it different since he took the coupons away people people who would have used them?

----

There are some deals on the SD and FW that are stealing. Period. I do not do those deals but I've jumped on my fair share of price mistakes.

I don't mind some lawyer having a bad day when his boss chews on him for screwing up a coupon and to a lesser degree I don't mind them losing a legal battle when they have staff lawyers and they would use them against me if it benefited them.

Ironically -personally- I would not take the coupons from people for whom 3 bucks might be money. That might seem like the smallest of the ethical issues here but that's the one that would make an impact on me.

I'm not trying to start a food fight or take a side... Just giving people food for thought. This site has far more moral landmines in than most would think.

Either way, kudos for bringing in a moral aspect to the table, it's an angle sorely lacking it today's world. -- (as you might have guessed) I spend a fair amount of time pondering what is moral and ethical. The world would be a better place if more people did.

I don't see it as stealing, just really low to take a whole tearpad and exploit a loophole. The legal department learned to put one per customer in the fine print after that I bet.

But the box store got their money from the manufacturer for the used coupons, so they're not losing money (not like Wal-mart can't afford it, am I right?). And the manufacturer expected to hand out $x when they issued the coupons, so I don't see the problem. It's just that this person ethically robbed others in their local area of using the coupon by hoarding them. Shame on them, and I hope they donate their excess to a good cause (homeless shelter, charity). I'm sure you could find a charity somewhere that would pay you to ship them those boxes.
