There are some commenters saying this is a terrible purchase (even for gaming), and there are some questioning why anyone should get this over something like a Roku. I'll try to address those two items.
First, the gaming complaint. You do not have to buy games through the play store or through NVidia. What I do is stream Steam games from my PC. So, I buy during the Steam sales for 80% off, then play from the comfort of my couch using my Shield. This isn't the only way to game on the Shield, it's just the way I use it, and I love it for that purpose. I don't have to pay full price. I don't have to play garbage games. It offers an incredible amount of freedom in gaming. FYI, you can also do this with plenty of other games besides your Steam library. I just used that as an example because it's how I use my Shield.
Second, why Shield over Roku? More power, more flexibility, better gaming experience. That's what it boils down to for me. Rokus are great. I bought a couple for my parents because they would have no use for the Shield. If you aren't going to game with it, Roku is probably a better choice. If you want the most capable Android TV device available, get the Shield.

From what I have read so far, the new version has some decent new features (Chromecast Ultra, HDR support, new controller is Bluetooth) but it is actually the same processor as the older model and they took away a couple things that bum me out (NO ir receiver or microSD slot). The new version also appears to come bundled with the voice remote and controller by default where that was a promotion on the old model.

The old shield have had HDR support for quite some time . And like its stated by NVIDiA all features of new shield will be made available to the "older model". Think of new model as somewhat of a price cut with a new controller. But at same token they took away couple of features

People who had experience with it please
Ye'up!
And the update drops today!
For gaming though, fairly meh in my opinion too but not bad enough to call it "crap."
