+1 for Hardware Raid in most cases. It's fire and forget...if you bork your OS and it's running your RAID...you'll wish for hardware raid.

This is a server deal thread, and the Xeon E3-1225 v5 Quad-core processor does not have hyper-threading. It can run four threads on four cores simultaneously.

There is a performance hit when running software raid. Correct me if i'm wrong, but this server only has one CPU so the performance hit will be noticed.

Sorry but you should have read the entire posting... However, if used with mechanical HDDs, synchronized, random write access pattern (eg: databases, virtual machines) will greatly suffer...

for home use it is quite pointless to have a dedicated software raid box. $30 RAID card can perform much better than most software RAID build.
